Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Identify the spatial variation of a range of issues that impact wellbeing and development
Explain the causes and impacts of issues affecting wellbeing and development.
The focus of this group inquiry is to develop an account of the human experience and personal stories of people affected by the wellbeing issue.
You will work in pairs to create a ppt presentation/slide on one well-being issue that has a spatial variation.
You will follow these steps:
Come up with 4 geographical inquiry questions to guide your research - what is it that you want to find out about this wellbeing issue? You must incorporate information on the spatial distribution and extent of the issue in ONE country. SHOW THESE FOUR QUESTIONS TO YOUR TEACHER BEFORE YOU CONTINUE.
Find out the geographical information about ONE country experiencing this wellbeing issue:
Name of country and continent
Map showing location
Average income per capita of this country and also that of Australia as a comparison - use the gapminder tools - click on the axis and select income and then type the name of the country into the search bar.
Literacy (youth) level of this country - change the axis to 'literacy - youth' and follow the same steps. Record both the country of interest and Australia as a comparison.
Locate media reports about the issue in response to your four inquiry questions. Use those questions as the basis for researching secondary sources. These can be video reports, news reports (i.e. BTN, BBC), articles (i.e. National Geographic).
Collect, select, record and organise relevant data and geographical information.
Over FOUR slides, use the information you have found to answer the FOUR inquiry questions you came up with at the start of the lesson.
Lastly - on one slide - write a three-sentence evaluation of two of the information sources for their reliability, bias and usefulness.
Wellbeing topics to choose from:
Child soldiers (e.g. South Sudan)
Famine (e.g. Somalia, Yemen).
Gender Inequality (e.g. Afghanistan, India).
Conflict/war (e.g. Syria, Afghanistan)
Malnutrition
