By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
Identify some of the locations of the world's major container ports.
Describe the spatial distribution of the major global shipping and trading routes.
Discuss the link between global shipping/trading routes and human wellbeing.
Task 1
Complete the activities on the left, in your books, using full sentences and positional language.
These are maps of the world's busiest shipping routes.
Tasks
Describe what both the maps show in terms of the spatial distribution of global shipping/trading routes.
Use Google Maps to assist you in planning a route for a container ship, starting in Beijing in China and following along the paths of the busiest trading routes, before making its way back to Beijing. Make a list of all the ports/countries that you would stop in along the way.
NOW - Next to each country on your list, use the Human Development Index to note the very latest measure of HDI using the interactive Index tool (scroll down).
What are some key trends or observations you note from the HDI of the countries on the busiest trading routes? Are they generally high or low in terms of their level of development?
