By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
Identify and describe the way that humans impact the aquatic biome.
Describe sustainably sourced fishing techniques and methods.
Explain how these methods will help to restore the balance between human/economic development and the restoration of aquatic biomes.
Task One
Popcorn read (one sentence before passing on to someone else) the information on the left.
Task Two
As you watch the video to the left, create a mind map of human impacts on aquatic environments.
In the middle on your mind map put - Humans Alter Aquatic Biomes.
The United Nations created 17 world development goals called the Sustainable Development Goals. They were created in 2015 with the aim of "peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future." One of the sustainable development goals is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. As we have been seeing, this is currently not happening. As a class, look at some of the sources of information below to see just how humans are NOT using the oceans, seas and marine resources sustainably.
Where Overfishing is Happening
The short answer: Everywhere. But some regions have seen more overfishing occurring than others, and the Mediterranean Sea is in serious danger. As of the summer of 2018, 62% of the Mediterranean's fish stocks were at risk of being completely exhausted (europa.oceana.org, 2018), and this is not a new trend. The graph below shows that unsustainable fishing has been occurring since the 1970s. It is also extremely common off the coast of Japan, Korea, and Oceania.
What is the solution?
The solution lies in adopting sustainable fishing methods and techniques instead of those that are unsustainable.
But what are those methods exactly?
Task Three
Conduct research into ONE type of sustainable fishing.
Write a paragraph to evaluate the sustainability of a method of fishing. Remember the structure from the last lesson: Identify - describe/explain - evaluate (using evaluative language).
Choose ONE of the options below to research for your paragraph.
Troll-caught fish (rather than e.g. purse seine fishing).
Pot fishing (rather than e.g. dredging).
Bottom long-lining and diving (rather than e.g. trawling).
Include the following:
Identify the method.
Describe the method (its features and characteristics, how it works, what it does).
Evaluate the sustainability of the method over traditional fishing methods using evidence to back up your assertion (statistics/numbers/facts).
