Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Define material and non-material standards of living, poverty, PPP and quality of life.
Describe and explain the spatial variation of wellbeing and development of MEDC's and LEDC's.
There are huge variations in levels of wellbeing in different countries accross the globe. Copy this down: Geographers use the term 'spatial variations' to describe the difference in natural and human features over an area of the Earth's surface.
For example water, life expectancy, Gross Domestic Product, conflict, cat owners... anything!
To start, take a look at what these children from different locations around the world consider to be their more prized possession.
You will now complete a series of independent learning activities using a range of resources. You may work with a partner but you must complete all activities in your own books independently. Put your hand up if you require any help from the teacher.
Task 1 - Watch the video and then define:
Material standards of living
Non-material standards of living.
Give examples.
Task 2
Use the video to make a mind map of 'quality of life' (0:22 secs).

How do we measure poverty? (2:08 secs).
Task 3
The Big Max Index was created to describe something called Purchasing Power Parity or PPP, or in other words, the different ways that inflation impacts countries differently. Watch the video and summarise what the Big Mac Index helps to explain:
Sentence starter:
The Big Mac Index helps to explain the .....
Task 4
Copy and complete this table in your books. MEDC = more economically developed country (wealthier), LEDC = less economically developed country (poorer). Fill in the gaps with what you would expect to see, regarding each of the indicators, within an LEDC or MEDC.
Finally - what is ONE thing you have learned in today's lesson? Everyone must stand up and call out one new thing they have learned - you may not repeat what anyone else has already said.
