The video to the right shows satellite imagery of the Earth at night. Images like this can help geographers identify the degree to which urbanisation has taken place in different regions worldwide. Some regions demonstrate very little lighting, indicating that urbanisation is limited, while others show clusters of lighting, giving us clues to the parts of the world with a higher degree of urbanisation.

Population Density: In simple terms, population density refers to the number of people living in an area per square kilometre.
The world's least-densely populated territory is Greenland, with a rate of 0.03 people per square kilometer. The country belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark and has been inhabited for over 4500 years. Most of Greenland is covered in ice, with the population residing mainly along the west coast, where lack of glacial cover has given way to rocky coast. If Greenland's ice were to melt, sea levels around the world would rise by 7m - a telling statistic for the geography and inhabitation of the three islands. With a population of roughly 56,000, Greenland is the number-one recommended spot if you want to feel like you've left all of humanity behind.
Look at the world map below. The lighter the colour, the lower the population density. Copy the table (underneath the map) into your books. Use the interactive map to first find 'Low-density countries'. Write down the names of 5 low-density countries in that column. Then do the same for medium density (write down 5) and then high density (write down 5).
Look again at the map. Look at the colours. Look at the locations. Now, working with a partner (so that you each have one map open in front of you) click on this link to view a second map showing global rainfall spatial distribution patterns https://www.mapsofworld.com/world-maps/precipitation-rain-and-snow-enlarge-map.html and compare the patterns.
Answer the following questions:
a) With a partner, create a list of reasons why high and low rainfall patterns correlate with population density patterns (both in terms of numbers of people and where people choose to settle within a country).
E.g. One link between high rainfall and high population density is......... This can be seen in........
E.g. In areas where rainfall is low, such as .............. there is also a low population density. One reason for this could be.....................
b) Use your list to help you with this next question: Explain how and why rainfall might influence the population density and settlement areas within a country.
Write your answer as a TEEL paragraph.
Refer to at least three examples of countries in your response.
Aim to use the following keywords in your response: latitude/longitude/climate/location/liveability/population density
