Learning Intentions
You should be able to:
Understand the historic patterns of migrations and the changes and continuities regarding where people have moved from and to.
Understand the characteristics and spatial patterns shown in maps and diagrams representing the movements of people and where they settle.
Consider what the future holds for international migration patterns based on data and current trends.
Success Criteria
By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
Define human migration and describe human patterns of movement and settlement.
Transfer information from adataset onto a world map.
Describe and explain how and why international migration patterns have changed
Human migration is the movement of people from one place in the world to another. Human patterns of movement reflect the conditions of a changing world and impact the cultural landscapes of both the places people leave and the places they settle.
The thickness of the arrows indicates amounts of people migrating; thicker arrows = major migration streams, thinner arrows = minor migration streams. The arrows reflect current migration patterns and not composition of populations.
Task 1 - Analyse the map and answer the following questions:
From which continent(s) are the most people emigrating?
To which continent(s) are the most people immigrating?
What is one pattern of migration within North America?
Why do you think these patterns are happening?
Working with the person next to you, you are to complete Part 1 of the worksheet below.
Individually you are to complete part 2 of the worksheet, your teacher will provide you with a blank world map.
You are to glue your migration map into your geography book.
Student worksheet, teachers to print.
Compare Figures 2 and 3 below. Describe how the origins of our migrants have changed since 1949.
Describe how the map of human migration around the world displays information about migration streams.
Explore migration relationships for countries other than the United States and report your findings. Use the World Migration Report and interactive website in your research.
Extension Task (Research based)
International migration is largely driven by geopolitics events.
Choose ONE of the following events to research and write a short report about.
1) The War in Ukraine
-when did this conflict start?
-Outline Russia's reasons for invading Ukraine.
-Outline how the war has damaged cities and residential areas in the Ukraine.
