School Law Seminar

I have included the agenda of a full day law seminar that I attended.

My role in this experience was a participant in learning.

This experience aligns with policy and law competency because I demonstrated an understanding of state, federal and case law governing general education, special education and community education.

As a future principal, I learned that I must understand the law before I suspend a student. The Office of Civil Rights is not taking anymore cases on access to bathrooms or lockerrooms. As a principal we do not use the language gender anymore, but refer to somones sex or sexual orientation. I also learned about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in consideration to searching someones belongs, security cameras, and educational data.

504 Implementation

Parent Request- 504 versus IEP

I have included notes for two different student cases. For child one, the teacher had made the request for further observation prior to conversation at conferences with the parent. Child two, the parent made the request at conferences to have her child tested for special education.

My role in this expereince was an observer.

This expereience aligns with policy and law competency because I demonstrated an understanding of state, federal and case law governing general education, special education and community education.

As a future principal, I learned that when a parent makes a request for testing you have to do it. I also learned that there are many steps in qualifying for a 504 and/or an IEP that need to be mapped out with the parent and teachers involved in the testing. There is a protocol that has to be followed.

This expereience aligns with policy and law competency because I developed, adjusted and implemented policy to meet local, state and federal requirements and constitutional provisions, standards and regulatory applications.

As a future principal, I learned that school policy sometimes comes from the county policy and the district policy. It is important to know which ones they are as you adjust and implement new policy each year. Also, when writing a student and teacher handbook you should write things, short and direct, and not too negative.
