Luke 4:14-21
Jesus Fulfills Scripture
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
Luke 24:44-48
Jesus Fulfills the Old Testament Scripture
44 He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.
When I think of the Old and New Testament books, I believe that the Old Testament gives us an historical account of God and God's people...I (and maybe it is only me) read the Old Testament much as I would read a history book, or historical articles...We have an introduction to God in Genesis and what happened during creation...And how creation happened...God spoke and creation came...And then we are introduced to the three Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph...And later we have the books of Mosaic Law written by Moses, the wisdom books, inspired and written by God's people...And we have the books of the Prophets, which were also inspired by God and written by His people...I learn how God created the nation of Israel, and how He did it, and God's people's history with Him...I learn that the Jewish go through many life's experiences with God and His Prophets, and Old Testament authors to achieve a particular end...And this end of the Old Testament is left open as Malachi writes about one in the spirit of Elijah will come some day to introduce the Messiah...
When I read the New Testament, I get a completely different feeling of reading these books...These Books are more of life's lessons for me...We are introduced to the Messiah Jesus in each of the four gospels and as I read about Him, and see His actions and His deeds, I hear, and believe that He is telling us that something has gone wrong in the world, and it needs fixed, and His Father, our God has sent Him to fix the world...We need more LOVE in our world...And the fixing of our world is done in a MOST LOVING WAY...An AGAPE LOVE that only God has...And in His LOVE as Jesus walks from village to village, I hear and read that this is not the way the world is supposed to be going, and it will be changed...And Jesus winds getting crucified for teaching about God, the Kingdom of God, and His LOVE...And what I take away is lessons, about how to fix this world...I learn lessons from Jesus and the New Testament about life's lessons...
And these Testaments, both Old and New are not supposed to be Old versus New Testament, but are one book, one Bible...Jesus has fulfilled the old Testament Scriptures...And the Christian believes that Jesus was the One that Moses and the prophets wrote about, and was the One to come and dwell on the earth, and to fix the problems of the world...Jesus is the Major Link between the Old and New Testament...The world's problem is sin, and the sins in the world need to be rectified...And it appears the problems will be fixed and the world better, after His Second Coming...And Jesus' second coming is at a time that God alone knows...
Jesus actually tells us He fulfills the scripture of the Old Testament...The Spirit of the God is on Him...God has anointed Jesus...Jesus would preach the good news to the poor...God has sent Him to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor."...When Jesus said these things He told His audience, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."...
