Luke 20:27-40
The Resurrection and Marriage
27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.
The human marriage on earth is a reflection of God and His LOVE for us...Marriage is the symbol of our eternal love in heaven with God and His Son...And the marriage and family on earth shows us what an eternal marriage might look like, when everyone unconditionally loves each one in their earthly families...This family composition is a whisper of what the family of heaven is like...But even though we try for marriage to last our entire earthly life, sometimes is does not happen...And sometimes brothers and sisters and parents have periodic problems, while others have problems that plague them a lifetime among each other...So the earthly marriage is just a shadow of the heavenly marriage...But after we die we all become children of God...
The Sadducees said that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things...So they ask Jesus a tough question about marriage that included the death of seven brothers...In the Mosaic Law it is written in this age and that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife and has no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother...The Sadducees and teachers of the law had different opinions on the supernatural aspects of religion...To put things simply, the teachers of the law believed in the supernatural...The teachers of the law Pharisees believed in angels, demons, heaven, hell, and so on-while the Sadducees did not...Most of the Sadducees were aristocratic...Jesus had an answer for the Sadducees that includes both the resurrection and angels...By calling out the names of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob we can believe that they are still alive in eternity...They have resurrected to God, because God is a God of the Living...
Jesus tells us that there is no marriage and immediate family of siblings in heaven, but that we will be like angels...We will love everyone in heaven...We can no longer die in heaven...The people of this age marry and are given in marriage...Earthly type marriages will not happen in heaven...And there are two ages, this earthly age, and a resurrected age with God and His Son...There is not a continuation of earthly life to heavenly life...Those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels...They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection...But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’...He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all are alive.”...Some of the teachers of the law (believed in the supernatural, and in the resurrection and in angels) who were listening on this lesson of both marriage and heaven said, "Well said, Teacher"...
We can be certain from Jesus of a future life in God’s Kingdom, entered into by means of our death and our resurrection and through Him...No one gets to God except through Him...Then we will look at this life very differently...So let us be encouraged to lay up our treasures in heaven while on earth, and believe in Jesus who gives us hope of the eternal life...
