Historical Context
The USA BMX Gold Cup Championship Series is one of the most important regional championship series in amateur BMX racing sanctioned by USA BMX. The series allows riders from local tracks across the United States to compete for regional titles and earn the prestigious Gold Cup number plates.
During the 2020 season, riders competed in regional qualifying races throughout the year, with their best finishes counting toward Gold Cup points standings. To be eligible for a regional title, riders were required to compete in at least two qualifying events within their region and then race both days of the Gold Cup Championship Final weekend.
The Gold Cup Finals were held across several regional locations in the United States, bringing together top amateur racers from each region to compete for Gold Cup #1, #2, and #3 plates in their respective age and skill classes. Winners were awarded the yellow Gold Cup #1 plate, which could be displayed at sanctioned races during the following season.
The 2020 Gold Cup series continued a long-standing tradition in BMX racing by highlighting grassroots competition at the local and regional level. While national events often draw the sport’s elite riders, the Gold Cup series is designed to recognize the strongest amateur racers within each region and encourage participation at local BMX tracks.
For many riders, winning a Gold Cup plate represents one of the highest achievements in regional BMX competition.
