Historical Context
Linn Kastan was one of the most influential frame builders in early BMX history. In the mid-1970s he co-founded Redline Bicycles along with Mike Konle. Redline quickly became one of the pioneering companies in BMX racing, producing innovative frames, forks, and components during the sport’s formative years.
Kastan played a central role in developing Redline’s early products, including designs that helped define the geometry and durability needed for competitive BMX racing. However, after several years with the company, Kastan left Redline in the late 1970s following internal business disagreements.
After departing Redline, Kastan launched his own company, Kastan BMX, where he continued building BMX frames and components using the experience he had gained during the early years of the sport. Kastan’s work remained closely tied to BMX racing culture and reflected the hands-on craftsmanship that characterized many early BMX manufacturers.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Kastan also experimented with producing mountain bike frames, reflecting the rapid growth of mountain biking during that period. Like many BMX builders of the era, Kastan explored the emerging mountain bike market as riders began adapting BMX design principles to off-road cycling.
Although Kastan BMX remained a relatively small operation compared to larger manufacturers, Linn Kastan’s influence on BMX frame design and manufacturing helped shape the early development of the sport.
