Historical Context
The American Bicycle Association (ABA) was one of the most influential sanctioning bodies in the history of BMX racing in the United States. Founded in 1977 by Merle Mennenga in Chandler, Arizona, the ABA was created to organize and standardize BMX racing events as the sport rapidly grew across the country.
During the late 1970s and 1980s BMX boom, the ABA developed a nationwide network of sanctioned BMX tracks, race series, and championship events. The organization established rules, rider classifications, and point systems that allowed racers from local tracks to compete for district, state, national, and world titles.
One of the ABA’s most significant events was the ABA Grand National Championships, which served as the season-ending championship race and became one of the largest and most prestigious BMX events in the world.
The ABA helped shape the structure of modern BMX racing by promoting organized competition, supporting track operators, and providing a pathway for amateur riders to progress through the sport.
In 2011, the ABA merged with the National Bicycle League (NBL) to form USA BMX, which continues to sanction BMX racing across the United States today.
