Historical Context
Eddy King was one of the most recognizable BMX racers of the late 1970s and early 1980s and an important member of the Torker BMX racing team during the sport’s formative years. Born in the Philippines and raised in Southern California, King began racing BMX in 1975 and quickly gained attention for his speed, style, and competitive results.
King joined Torker Engineering in 1978 after being co-sponsored by the company while racing for Wheels N’ Things. Later that year he became a full factory rider for Torker and helped represent the brand during one of the most influential periods in BMX racing history.
Torker’s factory team included several prominent racers of the era, and the company was known for innovative BMX frames and components that helped shape early racing technology. Riders such as Eddy King played a major role in promoting the brand through national competition and magazine coverage during BMX’s rapid growth in popularity.
King later moved to Diamond Back in 1980, where he would spend the remainder of his professional career and eventually turn pro in 1983. During his career he became known for his athletic ability and was recognized as one of the fastest amateur racers of his generation before transitioning to the professional ranks.
Today, Eddy King remains a respected figure from BMX’s early era, remembered both for his racing achievements and for helping establish the reputation of early factory teams such as Torker.
