As human beings, we all have basic needs that we strive to fulfil in order to feel fulfilled and content in our lives. These needs can be divided into two categories: surface needs and driving needs.
Surface needs refer to the basic requirements that we need to survive and function in our daily lives. These needs include things like food, water, shelter, and safety. Without meeting these basic needs, it is difficult to focus on anything beyond mere survival.
Driving needs, on the other hand, are the deeper desires that drive us to seek out fulfilment and meaning in our lives. These needs may vary from person to person, but they often include things like love, connection, purpose, and self-actualization.
While surface needs are important, it is the driving needs that truly motivate and inspire us to live our best lives. These needs are often at the core of our identity and can provide a sense of purpose and direction in life.
Driving needs are often hidden beneath the surface needs that we prioritise on a day-to-day basis. For example, someone may prioritise their job and work long hours to provide for their family (a surface need), but their driving need may be to find a sense of purpose and fulfilment in another type of work completely.
Recognising and prioritising our driving needs is essential for living a fulfilling and meaningful life. By identifying what truly motivates us and brings us joy, we can make intentional choices that align with our values and goals.
