Distraction is one of the most powerful mechanics in Torn, allowing a group of players to take down a much bigger enemy by weakening their defenses and reducing their ability to land hits. While simple in concept, it can be difficult to understand at first. However, once mastered, distraction is a game-changer—especially for newer players—in and out of war.
If you’re fighting alone, distraction does not come into play. You load into the fight, throw a temp, attack, and take turns exchanging attacks with the opponent until one side wins or the fight stalemates.
However, in a group attack, distraction becomes a key strategy. When at least two players join a fight, a list appears below the fight showing who is in the battle and their remaining HP. Whenever anyone in the fight makes an attack, it creates one tick of distraction for all the other attackers, visible as a small number that pops up in the left center of the opponent’s character. In other words, this number shows how many attacks have been made since your last attack.
Each level of distraction significantly reduces the opponent’s defense and lowers their accuracy, making them much easier to take down.
Gather a group of attackers—the number of players needed depends on the size of the target and the strength of the attackers.
Join the fight together, but wait until everyone is in before attacking.
Start by throwing a temporary weapon—this counts as an aggressive action and generates distraction.
Attack in rotation—each player attacks when their distraction level is the number of attackers minus 1.
Let’s say Danny, Jordan, Joey, and Jon are attacking Donnie:
All four players join the fight (but don’t attack yet).
Danny throws a temp → (Jordan, Joey, and Jon see "1" distraction level pop up).
Jordan throws a temp → (Danny sees 1, Joey and Jon see 2, Jordan resets to 0).
Joey throws a temp → (Danny sees 2, Jon sees 3, Jordan sees 1, Joey resets to 0).
Jon throws a temp → (Danny sees 3, Jordan sees 2, Joey sees 1, Jon resets to 0).
Now it’s Danny’s turn to attack.
The process repeats until Donnie is defeated.
Each player attacks when their distraction level reaches 3 (number of attackers minus 1). Note that the first round is a little different since the first attackers must attack before there is any distraction generated.
Despite the opponent’s reduced stats, players may die during the fight. If this happens:
Med out immediately, rejoin the fight, and continue attacking in rotation.
Do not give up—your allies need you to maintain distraction.
If you fail to rejoin, the fight is much more likely to fail, wasting the effort for everyone involved.
Study the animation below to see an example of four players using distraction in a group attack:
Each tick of distraction applies two debuffs to the target:
1. Aggression Debuff (Reduces Strength & Speed)
Formula: New Stat = Base Stat × (1 / (1 + D))
(where D is the level of Distraction)2. Suppression Debuff (Reduces Defense & Dexterity)
Formula: New Stat = Base Stat × (1 / 2^D)
(where D is the level of Distraction)As distraction increases, the opponent becomes significantly weaker. The maximum distraction level is 25, meaning more than 26 attackers won’t provide additional benefits.
Although, you won't need them. This table shows the exponential escalation of the Suppression Debuff:
Distraction is incredibly useful in wars, allowing factions to take down stronger enemies who would otherwise dominate the battlefield.
Additionally, distraction is key in NPC fights. Groups like Loot Rangers specialize in coordinating large-scale distraction attacks on NPCs. If you're interested in joining these battles, check out Loot Rangers and their Discord server (link in the upper right of that page).
Distraction is a game-changing mechanic that allows smaller players to take down huge targets. By coordinating properly, you can maximize your impact in wars, help your faction dominate, and even take down some of Torn’s most feared opponents.
Get out there, coordinate your attacks, and start distracting your way to victory
