Monstrology is the study of monsters, creatures, and critters within Keleva . It’s a fairly recent form of study given the relative unknown of many beasts on the continent. However, it’s led to a more thorough understanding of these creatures - furthered by various groups around the continent.
Monstrology was first coined by Dr. Tylul Monstrum who began study of Keleva’s wildlife in earnest some decades ago. Since his passing, a number of independent efforts have been made to better grasp and catalog each beast of this wayward place. Many of these Monstrologists have since collected into the Bureau of Monstrous Affairs - which persists to this day.
Monster Classes
The Bureau’s studies have built upon the original efforts of Dr. Monstrum. As the number of beasts cataloged grows, members began to notice traits that appeared across different animals that remained consistent in some areas. This discovery led to the belief that these beasts were derived or descended from a common ancestor; resulting in the foundation of Monster Taxonomy. In order to better visualize and categorize these groups, the Bureau created classes which correspond to mutual traits - they go as follows:
Koposeran
Koposerans are beasts that possess fur, warmblood, and give birth to live young. They’re the family that Humans and other humanoid races belong to. Given the abundance of Koposerans, some use subclassifications when referring to more direct group:
Fanged Koposerans have sharp teeth and claws - typically predatory.
Horned Koposerans have horns or antlers - usually herbivorous. Minotaurs belong to this group.
Primate Koposerans are known for higher intellect and dexterity. Humans and Elves belong to this group.
Sorkogan
Sorkogans are beasts that possess scales or feathers, partially or fully cold blood, and lay eggs. Given the abundance of Sorkogans, some use subclassifications when referring to more direct group:
Bird Sorkogans are feathered and beaked.
Snake Sorkogans have few or no limbs - typically predatory.
Lizard Sorkogans have scales and cold blood.
Arrackian
Arrackians are beasts that possess segmented bodies, cold blood, and lay eggs. Given the abundance of Arrackians, some use subclassifications when referring to more direct group:
Insect Arrackians have six limbs, a thorax and an abdomen.
Spider Arrackians have eight (or more) limbs, many eyes, and sharp mandibles.
Martindun
Martinduns are beasts that possess gills, scaly bodies, cold blood, and lay eggs. Given the abundance of Martinduns, some use subclassifications when referring to more direct group:
Fish Martindun are gilled, finned creatures.
Leviathan Martindun are defined by their enormous size.
Obscuran
Obscurans are beasts that do not fit any one classification. Given the variety of Obscurans, some use subclassifications when referring to a more direct group:
Natural Obscurans are those believed to have emerged via natural processes or phenomena as of unknown to Kelevan science and Monstrology.
Artificial Obscurans are those believed to have emerged via melding from forces outside nature.
