Amongst the natural and man-made waterways of the grasslands live the Mistcroak: a small Lizard Sorkogan whose thin skin requires they always remain moist. Drying out isn’t too much of a worry given their special vent glands, letting them produce clouds of steam. These don’t just keep them wet but also help to hide them when threatened. When expelled, the steamy clouds can obfuscate an area of ten (10) feet for three (3) turns. This ability does drain almost a quarter of fluid to use—meaning they can only use it a couple times before drying out. These glands can be collected and used to create Mist Potions of the same effect but are similarly fluid-expensive.
Their eggs are soft-shelled and would dry in the sun if left unattended. Humid places with readily available water, such as ponds, are the favored place of their nests. When Mistcroak are born they possess neither lungs nor limbs and must slowly develop both whilst living below the surface. Their tadpoles lack the mature vent glands of their mature parents thus making the harvest of them impractical for alchemy.
A diet mostly made of small critters means they pose no real risk to men. However the bulls do express some territoriality during the wetter seasons as they battle for ideal nesting sites. You’ll know when you’ve angered one when they let out their titular croak, a warning to rivals that they’re strong and willing to wrestle. These expressions of power are mostly limited to their own kind or animals of similar size—content to flee from anything bigger. They lack the brain necessary to truly be tamed but are often kept as pets nonetheless however untrainable.

Often found in the Jequis Bathhouses, Mistcroaks have a storied connection to some of Larova’s oldest areas. Their use of these pools as a nesting ground elicited some to call for their removal, however these efforts were halted when insects and disease infested them in their absence. For their help in removing these parasites, a small population is welcomed here to this day. More recently they’ve helped Larova again as the Mist Potions were vital to the escape of what remained of Larovan forces following defeat at The Battle of the Bog.
