Nightnadders are a nocturnal race of Fanged Koposeran found where it is dark and dank. Beneath the ground thereâs few creatures better suited to rule as princes of the darkness, armed with a pair of petal-shaped nostrils and swivelable ears to effectively âseeâ through smell and sound. Their detection skills are so great that they can find food buried six (6) feet below solid earth just on the stale air alone.Â
Finding food is one thing, getting to it is anotherâfortunately Nightnadders have ways of securing food. Upon each of their long digits is a similarly long claw that curves in order to grant purchase on uneven surfaces: they use these to scale up rocky terrain or curl them into a shovel to dig up buried food. Their talons would not be nearly as effective if it werenât for their long limbs which are packed with lean muscle; in a pinch they can scamper away at considerable speed (28 mph) regardless of terrain.
They feed upon the dying and the dead, possessing the right tools to deal with both. Their enormous jaws are lined with needlish teeth that can bypass the armored outer layer of their prey in much the same way as a Rondel Dagger. A Nightnadderâs jaw possesses an extra hinge so as to open wide enough to swallow an entire human head: using this they can gulp down enormous quantities of food before making a hasty retreat. Their diet is frequently interlaced with the rot and disease of the dead which appear to have no effect upon them, instead their saliva is laced with a slurry of blights. A Nightnadderâs bite will cause swelling around the wound, cell death and necrosis in the subsequent days, and progress outward, which may require amputation if not stopped before it can advance.

Living in colonies below the ground, they work as a unit to hoard food. These mounds of rotting flesh provide a warm host for their brood which is also raised as a collective. Much like bees there is a social expectation that every individual contributes, whether by: scavenging food, protecting the colony, or caring for the young. Those who are found to abstain for their duties are routed by the rest of the colony, banished or even killed for their woeful transgressions. There is no queen or alpha amongst these creatures, however the larger one becomes the more likely theyâll gain better access to food and pup-care.Â
Although Nightnadders prefer their food already dead, theyâre not above killing it themselves. Emerging in groups they scour the lands following the scent of disease and death. Opportunism has allowed them to exploit the misery of men by invading cemeteries and morgues from which they exhume the bodies below. If what they have found is too big to move on their own they may leave and return with more of their kind to rip it into smaller pieces. Once they have claimed a carcass they shall become very protective of it and attack anything that tries to steal from them.
The City of Larova bears an animosity to the creature for its habit of consuming their deadâa sentiment all the more prevalent in the face of The Pale. Relatives of the deceased vilify Nightnadders for their disregard of burial and the diseases they carry. Calls for slaughter and bounties are common with widespread encouragement to reveal where their colonies are found. A minority acknowledge their indifference to moral principle and their relatively limited risk to peopleâbut these voices are rendered meek by the deafening demands for their destruction.
