Throughout Keleva no creature is perhaps as prevalent as the Heargemen, found from her western shores to her eastern deserts. A race of Fanged Koposeran, they inhabit the role of opportunistic scavenger: equipped with a medley of teeth of which to feed on anything they can get their hands upon. A hard stomach means not even the most putrid flesh or rotting fruit shall poison themâso they are frequently found scrounging amongst waste.Â
Lacking the muscle or impressive weaponry of other beasts, Heargemen instead rely on their dexterous ability. They can use crude tools and weapons to further accentuate their swinging arms which bear roughly par ability with that of a Human. Their tool-using abilities are not to the same extreme as sapient races however: limited to crude cudgels, spears, or those scavenged from their smarter rivals.Â
One of the few places Heargemen excel physically is in their agility: upon digitigrade feet they can lope along at quite the pace (30 mph) with their short dull claws providing them the purchase they need to weave around obstacles or scramble up surfaces. These apertures are further assisted by an opposable thumb on both the hands and feet, granting them a sturdy grip from which to hold onto the soil or clasp a weapon.
Among the more peculiar traits of this creature is the fleshy pouch which is found amongst the femalesâmore commonly known as âdoeâsâof the group. This pouch serves to hold the brood of which typically only one belongs to a single mother. From here theyâre provided a warm place to rest and a safe haven to flee to should they be assailed. How long the babe remains in the pouch isnât known but eventually they become too large to fit within, forcing them to begin fending for themselves.

The Heargemen are simpleminded beasts who know not the complexities of sapience, however, it is clear from their use of devices that they possess a greater intellect than some of the more brutish beasts: seen forming bands, creating crude traps, and cooperating with others of their kind to ambush and raid. It is known that they speak a crude tongue which as of writing has failed to be translated: a guttural gurgling form of speech eerily similar to civilized tongue. Some of their ilk have even been capable of mimicking the prose of men, used to lure those whom they hunt into a trap.
Some groups have shown the crudest capacities for collaboration outside of their own kind, capable of trading through an archaic form of bartering. Heargemen only accept two items as valuable within this system: food for its nutritional benefits, and beads which they often wear on their fur. They can exchange items in their possession for these things and have a strong sense of fairnessâgrowing agitated if what is offered for their own supplies is inadequate.Â
Despite their abundance there is ultimately little known about the deeper complexities of this species. Some Monstrologists have theorized that they possess far more nuances than their visage would first suggest, however evidence is minimal. Study is ongoingâhowever tedious it may beâto uncover the secrets of this strange creature.
