Known for its heavy rainfall, it's a forest of tall trees with many vines and lush streams, siting in the northwest of West Tykonia. There was a village called Beothail before the Skeletal army invaded. Though difficult to tame or farm, the jungle is rich in rare and exotic foods found nowhere else.
Brahhax
Brahhax is a wild, predatory fern that grows to be around 40 cm. (~16 in.) in the volcanic soil of the jungle, requiring good, nutrient-dense soil and plenty of rainfall. No cultivated strains exist, only the tenacious variety that flourishes in the furthest reaches of the jungle. Brahhax ferns have a pale yellow-leaved central mass of sticky fibres coated in nectar that attracts flies, bugs and other critters. To bolster nutrients it might fail to imbue, Brahhax constitutes a predatory plant. When a critter is caught, Brahhax’s leaves curl in and digestion occurs, causing the leaves to tinge red at their base. The Brahhax’s central root isn’t beneficial for anything, but gatherers prefer to harvest the central core, clean it, dry it and proceed to process it to create a thick coating known as Brahhax gum. This gum is then applied to strips of leather to produce a natural fastening tape with strong adhesive qualities (similar to modern-day Velcro in its functionality).
These orange-striped peppers commonly grow at higher elevations in the jungle. This strain of pepper is highly sought after, regularly fetching exorbitant prices in markets as far as Avont. Tiger Peppers are commonly dried and ground into powder, creating a smooth and consistent spiciness that flavours cuisine well. Additionally, some find the peppers adept at preserving meat for jerky.
In the deep Jungles, Salaya Petals seem to blend with their surroundings, similar to the likes of a chameleon. When plucked from the jungle floor, they lose their camouflage to reveal a beautiful flower with mesmerising, cyan, green and aqua blue petals. Thus, herbologists unfamiliar with the jungle will find it challenging to locate the flower without the aid of a local guide. Druids of the region take Sanlaya Petals and crush them. They then combine the crushed petals with Chalksyrup, and ochre to create Sanlaya Paint. This special paint is initially white. When applied to parchment, walls, floor tiles or on the barks of trees, it will disappear. Sanlaya Paint will only appear and shimmer in the light of a full moon. It is often used to write hidden markings, directions or other information that needs to be obscured from the naked eye.
The Nucago Melon is a large jungle fruit with yellowish-orange skin marked by faint grooves and speckles. When opened, the inside flesh is bright orange, juicy, and sweet. It leaves a tangy aftertaste, one might dare to say an enjoyable, light burning sensation. Nucago Melons are known for their large size, and a ripe Nucago grows to reach a diameter of around 20 cm. (~8 in.). These large melons are typically eaten at gatherings or dried in strips for travel. They aid in gut digestion. Apothecaries use Nucago Extract for its ability to improve respiration.
Fragrant, sweet, and long-lasting. The Adango Pear is a pome fruit, commonly cultivated in the jungle and exported throughout Tykonia. When its grainy skin is ripped open, a fleshy interior is revealed surrounding a core of seeds. The Adango pear grows on trees and is harvested in the late summer season. These pears are usually consumed fresh, juiced, or dried for preservation. Apothecaries use Adango Pears for their anti-inflammatory properties.
This starchy, tuberous root is widely cultivated and used in both cooking and alchemy. Kikori Root grows under shrubs of the same name, and is harvested annually. It’s ingrained as a staple in Tykon’s cuisine, eaten fried or baked in sweet dishes. Kikori must be cooked before consumption, as raw Kikori is toxic. Alchemists also boil and press Kikori to produce Kikori Root Oil, valued for its taste-dulling and coagulation properties.
What it lacks in lustre, Rib Rice makes up for in prevalence. This strain of rice is particularly well-suited to the northwest Tykonia’s tropical climate, and is a regularly cultivated crop. In the jungles, you’ll find paddy fields almost exclusively growing Rib Rice, as it's a staple cereal grain in the diet of the average Tykonian. It’s filling, easy to cook, and stores well in granaries. Rib Rice has also found usage amongst alchemists as a base in tinctures and poultices, where its stable and predictable compound allows for the addition of more volatile ingredients.
