The preposition/ conjunction etc always follow the word. But in English, they precede the word.
-il = in, at
English: On the road
Malayalam: road il
since the word road ends in a consonant and the word il starts in a vowel, they can be combined,
road + il = roadil = on the road
Iritty + il= Irittyil = In Iritty,
Australia + il = Australiail = In Australia,
Eg: njaan Australiail aanu ( I am in Australia )
-ku, -il = to ( Eg. I went to a place )
In the most cases, -ku is used. But if the word ends in a consonant then mostly -il is used. For example:
njaan Irittyku pokuka aanu = I am going to Iritty
Raju Amsterdamil pookuka aanu = Raju is going to Amsterdam
avar veetil pokuka aanu = They are going to house
-aan = to ( to do something )
-aan is always used with a verb. For example,
njaan thinnaan varuka aanu = I am coming to eat
avan paadaan pokuka aanu = she is going to sing
-inte / -yude * = of ( consonant + inte ; vowel + yude )
Dileepinte = of Dileep
aanayude niram= color of elephant ( niram = color)
karadiyude color brown aanu =Color of bear is brown
-inte / -yude mukalil = on, up, on top of
meesayude mukalil = on top of the table, on the table ( meesa = table; mukalil = on top )
bedinte mukalil = on the bed
-inte / -yude adiyil = under
kaseerayude adiyil = under the chair (kaseera = chair; adiyil = under )
bedinte adiyil = under the bed
-ine patti / -ye patti = about ( consonant + ine patti ; vowel + ye patti )
ithine patti= about this ( ithu = this)
Rajuvine patti = about Raju
Dileepine patti = about Dileep
aanaye patti = about elephant ( aana = elephant )
-inte / -yude kuude = with
njaan Dileepinte kuude pookum = i will go with Dileep
aval Seetayude kuude varum = she will come with Seeta
-inaal, kondu = by
njaan ithu kondu cheyyum = I will do by/with this
-inu, -inu vendi, ku vendi = for
Dileepinu chaaya veenam = want tea for Dileep ( Dileep wants tea )
Dileep Seetaku vendi puu konduvarum =Dileep will bring flower for Seeta
Raju Seetaku puu konduvarum =Raju will bring flower for Seeta (same as above)
Seeta Rajuvinu vendi puu vaangum = Seeta wlll buy flower for Raju
Mikku Chikkuvinu puu vaangum = Mikku will buy flower for Chikku (same as above)
-oodu = to
There are some variations to the pronouns when a preposition (to, for etc ) is added. They are listed here. It is difficult to understand them comparing to English. For example 'to' in English has many meaning. For example 'to' has three different meanings in the following three sentences.
1) I am going to Amsterdam
2) I told to her
3) He is going to take bath
In Malayalam, all these different 'to' have different words. They are -ku, -oodu and -aan respectively.
So when you say/tell/speak/ask/show anger to someone, then, to= -oodu.
I tell to her = njaan avaloodu parayunnu
He told to me = avan ennoodu paranju (me = enne)
I am talking to you = njaan ningaloodu samsarikuka aanu
I am telling to Dileep = njaan Dileepinoodu parayuka aanu
If you use the name of a person, then you must use -inoodu.
