A Look at Tradition 3
In this meeting, we often refer to the term “God” or “Higher Power,” and recognize these words have individual meaning to each of us. CoDA has no religious affiliation and is made up of members with a range of beliefs including atheists and agnostics.
Our Am I Codependent? pamphlet states that we do not have to believe in God to belong to CoDA. It continues
“...As we attend meetings and listen to CoDA members describe their recovery, we hear them describe a relationship with a Higher Power, and notice that those who maintain a regular connection with this power experience what we seek – recovery. The form of this Higher Power is left for each of us to discover…”
Many of us arrived at CoDA not connecting with a Higher Power. We found that as we worked the 12 Steps with the help of the CoDA tools, our individual understanding of a power greater than ourselves grew.
Tradition 3 reminds us that the only requirement for membership in CoDA is the desire for healthy and loving relationships.
