PRIMARY AND SECONDARY RESEARCH
PRIMARY
Research into microphone techniques though asking singers etc, and trying them myself
Also trying vocal techniques myself
I did some microphone techniques with Judith which can be found in Week 6 of my blogs in the practical section of my blog. There is a written up piece of what we did in the research and the video evidence is in the practical section.
SECONDARY
A website i used when looking into microphone techniques is 6 Mic Techniques Every Singer Should Know About - Virtuoso Central
It talks through each point below in detail to help make your performance better when using a microphone hand held or on a stand.
Vocal techniques: refer to artist/genre research
Mic techniques/research: refer to equipment research
On this website, I found tips to mic placement when performing or recording when using the BETA 87A microphone. below are screenshots from the website listing different factors (rules) to follow when using the BETA 87A microphone and also suggested microphone placement. This is useful into my research of microphone placement as this came from a trusted source being SHURE itself, the company that produces the microphones.
Essential Microphone Techniques & Tips for Vocals | Vocalist
On this website, It talks about different tips into how you should hold a microphone and the different factors to take into account, such as plosives, when singing. Below is their tips on how to hold a microphone and the angle it should be held at. I tried these myself with my teacher when doing a run through on my original song (can be found on week 6 blogs)
TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience for this project is slightly different to most as I am going to ask some production students and R'n'B listeners to listen to my tack then provide feedback through a survey with a couple of questions, to what I could improve for future references and to what I can add to make my tracks more 'R'n'B' like to see if I missed any key features than could make my song stand out more.
To the left is the feedback i got from some fellow musicians on my original track 'Wonder'. I can use this feedback for any sort of later project if i was to create a R&B style song again. It will also help for my final evaluation. The main thing i noticed from my feedback was the fact i should add vocal layering and harmonisation to my track as it was a key thing missing from that track.
ROLES AND COLLABS
Roles Responsibility & Collaboration
Who is responsible for what? Hold a meeting and identify skills and
experience when assigning roles.
Songwriting
Leading / minuting and chairing meetings.
Organising your time / rehearsals / recording sessions.
Leading rehearsal / recording sessions.
Mixing / mastering.
Video capture / editing
Graphics / branding
Online presence management – social media / YouTube etc.
Parts – guitar / drums / vocals etc.
In the roles and collaboration aspect, I am in charge of the majority of my project such as the songwriting, song production, recording vocals, etc.. Tyler has helped with musical input such as different elements I could factor into my song and helping me come up with drum parts as he is a drummer. During the process of making my song, I will need to take my own photos and videos for evidence and upload them onto my website when possible.
For my project, my goal was to complete two original songs in a R'n'B style. For this project, I have made the tracks on logic pro with some help from my friend Tyler and teacher Judith. Tyler helped add the drum beat onto my first track and also taught me how to add reverb onto certain instruments and what is a good amount of reverb when I am adding it. Judith helped me analysis the song I used for inspiration and try and incorporate those elements into m own song. I then started playing about on logic coming up wit some basic parts. My first song is quite simple and straight forward with not many changes and only being 2mins and 30 seconds long. I wrote the lyrics myself at home by giving myself a stimulus to work off and the repeatedly listed to the track to add lyrics over it and think of a melody. When i added vocals, my friend Charlotte helped me set up the mic and record my vocals onto the track during second lesson on Friday 2nd (may). For the mixing part, I am going to ask my teacher Matt or Jordan for feedback and help to what I should do to the tracks to make them more smooth.
For the second track, I did most of it myself but had Judith once again help pick apart some key features from my inspiration of song. We came out with using some main chords my inspiration used in her song, to add to my own song. I made most of the song at home alone on logic by just messing around and trying different things to see what works. I did the same thing with the lyric process by giving myself a stimuli and working off of that. It did take a few attempts to get what I wanted lyrically wise but eventually got an idea to work off.
