Week 6:
planning and production:
Fot this week, My main goals are to get some video evidenve of primary research (mic technqiues) with judith and to do some test rus of my orginal songs.
I spoke to Judith about her wanting mt to perform the song during POS on Wednesday to a couple of people on my course. We need to look into how i would go about performing it such as bluetoothing my backing track from soundcloud and to make sure it all works.
I need to make a start on my final evaluation the week aswell and get some of that done while still going over my blogs tomake sure i have everything down that i need such as photo evidence and full descriptions to what i did that week with secure details.
research
Primary research with judith.
For my research this week, I am going to discuss some microphone techniques with Judith and attempt them myself.
We got this done on Tuesday last practical lesson for the last 20 mins of the lesson. She spoke me through some different ways to hole the make and the distance of where the microphone should be from my mouth. We spoke about the difference between when the mic is closer to my mouth than when further away. We also spoke about belting so holding the mic further away if i go to sing louder. She got me to attempt them myself as well to see what felt comftable for me and how i felt when holding the mic as before i would hold the mic very close to the diaphragm almost on the diaphragm. I gave it a couple tries when singing my orginal song and got this on video which is below in the practical section of this blog.
practical skills
Tuesday (20-5-25) During my second practica with Judith, we played around with some dyanmics on my second orginal song. Playing around with how i sing some of the words and what words i should add an emphasises on or change a note on. I sang through the song up until the first chorus and repeated hat twice for Judith to hear. She then spoke to me about how i can add 'flair' to some words so its not all monotone. She wrote some lyrics on the whiteboard, the last two lines of my first verse 'move a litle closer, don't hesitate, don't make me wait. I want you to stay'. She would add liittle symbols over what word she thought I should add more focus on. She did the same with the second verse last to line 'I know its wrong but it feels so right, why does the best love only come at night?' and once again pointed out which words she thinks needs mor foucs. She then got me to go over and add symbols to what ever word i think i should change up how i sing, I would sing through the line and try different things such as changing the key for certain words or making some notes longer.
To the right is a photo of the whiteboard with my lyrics and some symbols above certain words to show what i could do to the word when singing. The upwards arrow head over closer signals i should singing it a fraction of a key higher making it stand out. The dash over hesitate is almsot like a break in the word, making the word more punchy when singing. We looked at doing something t the word feel to try and express more emotion, we tried a couple different things for that which is in ... video.
Judith also spoke me through some microphone techniques on how to hold a microphone and the difference it makes depending on the angle you hold the mic and how close/far away from my mouth i hold it. We tried some different positions and spoke about how if i hold the make really close to my mouth the plosives (these occur when a burst of air generated by consonants like 'p' 'b' and 't' hit the microphone diaphragm) i make became a lot louder and noticeable compared to when i hold it sightly down and at an angle(almsot like holding an ice cream). She told me to try and hold the mic in slightly different ways to se what i liked best, and to see the difference it makes when im singing. We also discussed about dynamics, so if i were to sing a word or part of my song louder i should move the mic away from my mouth and if. sing more gentle/quieter, to move te mic a bit closer not too close. Once again we experimented with that in mind and sang through my song to see where i would sing something a bit louder (mainly around the second line of my chorus) and to test moving the mic away slightly.
She also spoke to me about doing a performance of my song tomorrow (21-05-25) in a POS session.
Wednesday (21-05-25): Live performance in G11 of 'Slow motion'
Today I did a live performance of one of my original songs 'Slow motion' . I feel it went decently well but it could've been better. I feel i could've emphasised some other words and show more emotion in my performance. vocal runs, mic placement, held mic, actual song of loads dynamics, shows of vocal, staring off not at audience, didn't move a lot.
blend of live and backing track. flow and energy
I got some feedback from my singer friend George Humphries about my performance of my original song. He said that i had clear vocal runs with the song showing off my vocals very nicely with the song having a lot of dynamic elements. He also stated that my microphone placement was very good such as moving the mic away when i sang louder and the way i held the microphone. However, He stated that i didn't move a lot and just stood in one spot while looking away from the audience and looked at the lyrics every so often which made my performance less good. My teacher Judith said that i did a good job at blending the backing track with my live vocals quite well where there's minimal clash and sounding clean. She also said that i had a good flow when performing with good energy as well.
