Week 3:
planning and production:
context-purpose-aims and objectives
This week i need to focus on my time management and add a lot more onto my website as I am falling behind in the write up part of FMP. I also need to make sure I am documenting all my work and uploading it using screenshots and writing a small description for each photo as to what i had done on that day.
I want to add vocals on to my track by the end of the week, trying to use F01 during matts lesson if its free. I also want to start on my second song this week getting down main parts such as a bass line, drum parts and maybe guitar or piano.
I also want to finish up my microphone research and crack on with any other equipment research I need to look into.
research
context- purpose- aims and objectives- pre production
For this week, the main aspects of research i will need to do is looking at other pieces of equipment i would use in my FMP such as Audio interface, The DAWs im using with effects it has etc. This all links to my FMP as they are things i will be using in my project such as when i come to recording vocals.
I also wnat to add a bit more to my vocal technique research in my artists and genre research and get it done by the end of this week with some example songs to show where each technique is present. This links to my project as one of the aspects of making an R&B song is understanding the techniques that goes into making the song
This week i did get my audio interface research done. I also did some polar patterns research to show that most common/ main patterns you would come across when recording vocals. I got a start on my DAWs research but need to go back and complete it
practical skills
This is the work of my first song so far, in this photo i am changing the chorus bass line, I did this by just changing the first note of this section to a lower note and repeating this on all the parts that have the same pattern, and repeatedly listening to it over through looping the chorus so it only played that part and not the whole song to make sure it all sounds okay, and to see what lower key sounds best so it doesn't sound out of place and doesn't clashes. I finished the track for this song but am going over it to see if there's anything I can change or add. I then need to add vocals on top preferable on Friday in Matts lesson in F01.
MAY 2- I got vocals added onto the track. I did this in F01 with my friend Charlotte. We set up the mic in F01, with the mic stand, pop filter, and shock mount. I pluged the mic cable into an Audio interface which is connected to the mac and sends the signals through to Logic. The headphones werent working at first so we had Matt take a look into what the problem was. It was sending the inout audio to the headphones and output to the USB. We go that all sorted and then ran a few test attempts to get the gai at a good level. I did three recorded takes all were consistent but some had a few little different tweaks through how i sang a certain word etc.
This is my track for my first song, without vocals,
-process, -elements, -instrumentation, etc...
These are the different lyrics and ideas I had when starting the lyric writing process, I came up with these just by looking around my room seeing what sparked any interest and writing some random words down and trying to make a line out of it. I did struggled a bit when starting to write the lyrics and I had a writers block but over the Easter holidays I kept going back to them and seeing what I could add. I would try and hum a melody i had in mind to see if that would help with ay sort of lyrical flow. It did for a little bit with just putting random words on paper and working of them. . I'm not fully contempt with the lyrics as i feel like they could be better, maybe more descriptive and emotional. They ack the ideas i wanted to show and they don't tell a story clearly in the way i wanted it too but I also didn't have loads of time to change them so am going to keep with what I got and maybe make tweaks when i get to perform it live . During this process I just kept listening back to what i had on my track and wrote some key ideas down to what I wanted the song to be about. I reflected on my own experiences during this process to see if that could help with any lyrics which helped me write the chorus. I also wanted the song to have the word wonder and the element of thinking of someone else and wondering about them, almost yearning for them to return and have them near by. I have a poster on my wall that i used as a settig to think kabout for the song, to help get a sense of loonging that i wanted.
This is what i ended up with for my second song.
These are screenshot of my first edition of my second song, however I didn't stick with it and changed it up but did keep the chords from the piano bit and embeded it into my new take
I did stick with these takes s the didn't capture what i wanted in the song. The piano part with the build up on the keys wasnt something i uflly enjoyed either. It sounded off and wrong to me. The drum part aswell wasnt something i was looking for as i had an idea in what i wanted and it was close but not exactly what i had i mind. I did like the chords i used in the piano part so i restarted the song but started with the drum part instead of the piano section. This was alot more helpful, i worked off the drums and added a piano section that i enjoyed atlot more.
This is my final (first) edition of my second song which I've called it 'slow motion'. This is just the track with no vocals as I'm still working on the lyrics for it.
-process -elements -instrumentation etc
These are the chords i picked up from the artist(songs) i had inspiration from, 'Sunshine' and 'Life will be' by Cleo Sol. I used these in my song but very quietly like background noise to add more layers to the song.
to the left is a video where i have broken down what inspiration i took from Sabrina with examples of me singing my own song as well as discussing the process of my lyrics and my first version of a verse and why i scrapped it.

-recorded vocals song 1
-This week I added a rough recorded of my vocals for the first song. I also started my second song. I did about three different versions of what I wanted to do for my second song, and then chose which one was the one i wanted to work off and finished up the track for that . I worked on lyrics for my second song but haven't finished it yet and will carry on working on them to next week.
Next steps
priorities for next week
finish vocals for second song, work on primary research
