Week 1: (1-4th April)
planning and production:
context-purpose-aims and objectives
My aims for this week are too carry on the research for my vocal techniques amd try and get a start on my production side of research such as looking into equipment ill need, what microphones are best and which one is best suited for R'n'B singers with an evaluation, i also need to talk to Jordan about my target audience research and start my job role research. Finally i want to try and start my first track and keep looking into what inspiration i have for my tracks and analysis the songs i am using for inspiration
research
(context- purpose- aims and objectives- pre production)
-Research into vocal techniques used in rnb and try some out
-more research Sabrina Claudio, and her style with vocal techniques etc.
-Objective= have my vocal research completed by the end of the week and finish up artist research.
Aims- to start on other pieces of research to have finished over the half term, such as production techniques or equipment research
For my research, my aims are to start on my second part of artist and genre research and look into vocal production picking out the key features used in R&B music, and have that finished by the end of half term or mostly complete to where i only need to add little bits., I also want to carry on any vocal technique research I had started trying to get as much of it out the way so I don't have to worry about it as much later on when i start my practical work, and brush up on my artist research and make sure i have enough information about the artist i choose and their own styles to help me get a start on my own music using them as inspiration. This research is link to my project as one of my goals for my FMP is to understand different vocal techniques used in R'n'B to help me have a better understanding of it for my project or in the future if i were to create any more of my own stuff and to try them for myself. as well as understanding the style choices of the artist i choose and to interlink them into my own work and imbed some of their styles into my work to show i have understood their style while also making it my own.
Influences i have taken from the artist i chosen (picked up on when analysing song) are elements such as
From Sabrina Claudio: I picked up her use of soft vocals when she sings, not sounding harsh and relaxing her voice to make it sound tender and smooth, I picked up on this and kept it in mind for when i approach singing for my first track. I also picked up on the chord progression she uses in her song as it is catchy and memorable. I want to use something similar in my own song when creating my tracks.
practical skills
(incl. all practical tasks undertaken to progress the project- production- post production- add sc- video/ audio clips- voice recording- photos)
-test vocal techniques
-Start one of my songs, working on my logic skills and creative skills.
For this week, I plan to start my first song on logic through my inspiration (such as picking up any common patterns the artist may have used in her music) and taking my own spin on their genres/vibe. I also plan to carry on my research on genre and techniques used in creating R&B music.
I did get a bit of a start on my first song getting the basics down to get me started on the song, however i didn't get any photo evidence. I sat with Judith on Thursday and we broke down the main song I'm using for inspiration which is 'need u to need me' and took some key features of the song to add to my own. On logic, We used her guitar part from Claudio's song and made a start on my song using it but changing it up so its not exactly the same, We used the structure of the guitar part (the rhythm) and similar chords that she used in the song just changing up a few notes every now and then. We spoke about how Claudio's work is very soft and light with nothing overpowering so I made a start by adding some other elements to the song after I got main part down, such as a rough drum part to which my friend Tyler(drummer) listened to and gave me some feedback on what I could change, The drum part I came up with was a soft background noise to give the song more depth and layers. Me and Tyler kept the same kind of structure of … but making it more clear and he also added some reverb to the drums. I repeatedly listened to Claudio's song listening to things such as when the drums come in and how they give more emotion to the song by adding more dynamics into it. I also picked up on how she has a more 'empty' intro just having her vocals and guitar parts with some effects, I took this idea and tried it on my song to see how it felt. The empty beginning gives the feeling of raw emotions and showing pure feelings when she is singing. The drums coming in after the first chorus in Claudio song shows her other emotions coming in such as 'yearning' showing how its taking over her. I wanted to try and show this in my song with the instrumental by adding the drums in at the () bar of the song. I ran out of time as I left starting the practical stuff quite late so only got a guitar part and some piano down for my first song. Tyler also added a pedal notes into the song to give it more of a ground feeling and more secure feeling to the song which helped give the song a bit more depth.
evaluation and reflection
(weekly reflections, evaluative reviews, videos/blog of process and outcome)
This is a link to my spoken evaluation of week 1 of my FMP.
Next steps
(priorities for next week)
-Half-term: stay ontop of research, try and complete equipment research and start my target audience and P+S research,
-Week back to college, carry on Song 1 production. Have it mostly completed by end of week to start song 2
My main priorities for next week is to sit down and carry on with my first song and add some more elements to the song and get some more progression going so i dont fall too far behind. I also want to keep adding onto my research bit by bit so i dont have to worry again so much later on down the line. I need to look into what i am going to do for my target audience and how i am going to measure the success of my project, i also need to look into my primary research and how i wanna go about that and asking people about microphone techniques and how to hold a microphone.
