Week 4:
planning and production:
context-purpose-aims and objectives
My aims for this week are to finish up adding lyrics to my second song and have them fully complete up to my expectations, and to get vocals recorded onto the tracks even if its a rough take. I might try to re-record vocals with Judith in a studio if there's any free space and look into booking the studios if i need to with her but that's still undecided. I also need to keep adding my artist and genre research page and try and get them fully complete and up to a decent standard for a pass and get a start on trying out vocal techniques and evidence it onto my website, if ot move this onto next week. I can try and do it during my practical sessions on tuesday or thursday. If not i can do it at home after college.
research
context- purpose- aims and objectives- pre production
For this week, my goal is to get my equipment research done (finishing up on my DAWs section) and making sure i got everything there with links and evidence. This links into my project for i am using Logic to do all my songs on so researching it will give me a better insight to why i should use Logic and the different elements to the DAWs.
I finished up my artist and genre research completely this week as i finished up with some final vocal techniques and production styles that go into a R&B song, researching these factors will help me when finishing up my tracks as it allows me to get a better understanding on how to approach the singing style such as lengthen some notes (words) and to improvise when performing my song. I also wrote up about the genre itself and how it came about/ where it originated from giving me some insight of certain elements that makes an R&B and how it developed overtime expanding my knowledge on the genre itself with the different styles and approach's that come into R&B tracks. I also finished my equipment research this week finishing with writing about the process of recording vocals and the set up of it and the DAWs of my choice that i used, but feel i can add more through links to other websites (Harvard referencing)
practical skills
incl. all practical tasks undertaken to progress the project- production- post production- add sc- video/ audio clips- voice recording- photos noyes
-This week, me and Judith looked at turning my music into sheet music(scores) looking at the notes, as we discussed her play with me if i were to perform my songs at the Bomba gig however i am going to perform in CCI on Friday 16th instead during college hours. I also added some more elements to my second song to create a fuller sound, and now just need to add vocals onto the track. I added a some snaps and shakers into the song During the verse and shakers in the chorus, I did this as i felt the song was a bit plain and needed some other elements to it. These features helped give the song some extra layers not making it so plain and boring.
Below is my second song on Logic Pro, showing the different elements to the song. The blacked out sections are parts that didnt make it and i didnt use. This would be because they did fit the style of the song or wasnt what i had in mind and sounded off.
To the left is the finished edition of my lyrics for the second song 'slow motion', Its in structure order, with the first verse, chorus, second verse, and a bridge. The dashes between words indicate a break/pause in the sentence so when I sing it or go to record vocals I will know the melody structure of how I want to sing the lyrics and when I wanna break up the sentence to fit the track. I came up with these lyrics through alot of trial and eror. I wanted the sog to have a focus of 'Slow motion' as the chorus drums go into half time, and the song overall being quite slow and chilled out. I also wanted to add elements of a being with someone that almost seemed forbidden, frowned upon but still wanting them around. Where only one person seems fully invested in whatever they have going on. I use some books i have read in the past for some sort of inspiration. I also used Tate Mcrae as inspiration when it came to writing the lyrics, taking in the way she writes her lyrics and how she describes a certain situation.
Below are the idea I first had for this track, I got them printed off to see them on paper so I could edit them or write around them. However, I didn't like what i came up with below and re started with a different approach. I didnt like what i had as it was't capturing the song in the way i wanted it too, and the lrics came across too 'cheesy' and romantic i feel, As in. .my mind i knew i wanted it to be more about something that shouldn't exist I used the stimulus of a 'forbidden romance' and wanting someone you know you shouldn't have. Originally I had the stimulus of loving someone and everything moving in slow motion etc, but didn't like the ideas I came up with. For reference, I was inspired by Tate McRae's lyrical ideas and how she has written her songs and also SZA. And I used the ideas of forbidden romance from books I have read in the past.
evaluation and reflection
weekly reflections, evaluative reviews, videos/blog of process and outcomes
This week I finished the track for my second song completely and finalised the lyrics for the song, however I havent added the voclas onto the track yet. I also brushed up on some research tasks and went over some if my blogs just to add some details i may have missed from before. Me and Judith looked over making a music score for my projects as we was talking about her playing the piano for my performance that i am doing in CCI on the 16th Friday, i booked that in with Ian through email with judith. I am going to perform both of my orignals with a backing track instead of Judith playing with me.
I also started a new branch of research, looking into the main production techniques in R'n'B music and also where it originated from.
I also added a new page to upload all my singing videos to show the progression of my vocals and also to help me watch them back and see what I can improve to make my vocals more clear.
Next steps
priorities for next week
My main priorites for next week are to get the voacls on my second track and too start fully learning my lyrics for my perfomance. I also need to complete my research and have Jordan or Judith go over it to see if i am missing anything or could add ahything more. Over the course of next week i am going to try and upload all my work before the monday (19th) so i know i have done everything and dont have to stress too much about compeleting any extra tasks.
