Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, de jeunes hommes démobilisés commencèrent à fabriquer des plateaux et autres objets à l'aide de machines et de bâtiments achetés à l'usine d'évacuation de l'arsenal militaire de Kokura à Hita. Pour répondre à la demande de meubles pour les mines de charbon de Chikuho, les forces d'occupation et leurs familles, ils utilisèrent les techniques de fabrication de plateaux pour produire de petites chaises. C'est ainsi que la région devint connue sous le nom de « zone de production de meubles à pieds ». Au début des années 1950, la région commença à développer et à produire des « ensembles de réception », puis étendit ses canaux de vente à Tokyo et Osaka. Au milieu des années 1970, la région était devenue une industrie majeure avec un chiffre d'affaires annuel dépassant les 10 milliards de yens, ce qui en faisait l'un des principaux pôles de production de canapés du Japon. Aujourd'hui, la zone se rétrécit en raison de la concurrence des produits étrangers, mais de nombreuses entreprises connexes, telles que des fournisseurs de matériaux et des ateliers de couture, subsistent.

After the Second World War, young men who were demobilized began manufacturing trays and other items using machinery and buildings sold off from the evacuation factory of the Kokura Army Arsenal in Hita. In response to demand for furniture for the Chikuho coal mines, the occupying forces, and their families, they applied tray-making techniques to produce small chairs. This marked the beginning of the area being known as a "legged furniture production area." In the early 1950s, the area began developing and producing "reception sets," and subsequently expanded sales channels to Tokyo and Osaka. By the mid-1970s, the area had grown into a major industry with annual sales exceeding 10 billion yen, making it one of Japan's leading sofa production areas. Currently, the industry is shrinking due to competition from overseas products, but there are still many related companies such as material suppliers and sewing factories.

戦後復員した若者たちは、日田の小倉陸軍造兵廠疎開工場の払い下げ機械や建物を使用してお盆などの製造を始め筑豊炭鉱や進駐軍ならびにその家族向け家具の需要を受けお盆製造技術を応用し小椅子の生産を始めました。これが「脚物家具産地」といわれる起源となりました。昭和３０年初頭には「応接セット」の開発生産が始まりその後関東、関西に販路を拡大した結果昭和５０年代半ばには、年商百数十億円を超える一大産業に成長し日本有数のソファ産地となりました。現在は、海外製品などにおされ縮小傾向にありますが資材業者や縫製工場など関連会社は、まだまだ多く存在しています。

What is the Hawk Legend?   鷹伝説とは?

Il y a bien longtemps, Hita était recouverte d'un lac profond. Entourée de montagnes, elle était impossible à vivre, et seule la surface de ses eaux calmes reflétait le soleil. Un jour, un grand faucon apparut du ciel oriental. Déployant ses ailes, il écarta les nuages ​​et plana majestueusement au-dessus du lac, baigné de soleil. Alors que le faucon s'élevait vers le nord, la terre gronda et les montagnes à l'ouest s'effondrèrent dans un grondement tonitruant. Le lac s'assécha, révélant un bassin. Trois collines s'élevaient côte à côte : Higuma au sud, Tsukikuma au nord et Hoshikuma à l'ouest. Les habitants y virent un signe céleste et vénérèrent le soleil, la lune et les étoiles, et vénérèrent le grand faucon qui fendit le lac comme un messager de Dieu. Ainsi, le lac devint des rizières, et grâce aux bienfaits du soleil et à la guidance du faucon, les habitants commencèrent à vivre une vie prospère. Le lac s'assécha rapidement, laissant apparaître un bassin fertile.

Long ago, Hita was covered by a deep lake. Mountains surrounded the lake, making it impossible for humans to live there; only the calm water's surface reflected the sun. One day, a large hawk appeared from the eastern sky. Its wings parted the clouds, and it soared majestically above the lake, bathed in sunlight. As the hawk flew north, the earth rumbled and a mountain to the west crumbled with a thunderous roar. The lake's waters drained away, revealing a fertile basin at the bottom. The three hills left behind by the water stood side by side: "Higuma" to the south, "Tsukikuma" to the north, and "Hoshikuma" to the west. The people saw this as a sign from heaven, worshiped the sun, moon, and stars, and revered the great hawk that parted the lake as a messenger of the gods. Thus, the lake became rice fields, and with the blessings of the sun and the hawk's guidance, the people began to live prosperous lives. The water from the lake flowed out all at once, revealing a fertile basin.

はるか昔、日田の地は深い湖に覆われていました。山々は湖を囲み、そこに人の住む余地はなく、ただ静かな水面が陽を映していたといいます。ある日、東の空より一羽の大鷹が現れました。その翼は雲を裂き、陽の光をまといながら湖の上を悠々と舞い続けました。やがて大鷹が北へ飛び去ると、大地は鳴動し、轟音とともに西の山が崩れ落ちました。湖の水は一気に流れ去り、底から肥沃な盆地が姿を現しました。そして、水が削り残した三つの丘が、南に「日隈」、北に「月隈」、西に「星隈」として立ち並びました。人々はこれを天のしるしと受け止め、太陽と月と星を祀り、湖を裂いた大鷹を神の使いとして崇めました。こうして湖は田となり、陽の恵みと鷹の導きによって、人々は豊かな暮らしを営むようになったのです。湖の水は一気に流れ出して、肥沃な盆地が姿を現しました。
