Re: New waste incinerator
Here are the minutes from the meeting which was held on 22 March 2019
Following the government's decision to build a new waste incinerator on the old landfill site in Cape Greko we met to decide what action residents could take to oppose this new source of pollution. Various ideas were discussed about how we could prevent this from happening.
One suggestion was to get everyone in the area to sign a petition against the decision. Everyone agreed that this was a first good step. Another proposal was to present the government with some alternative locations, but no one at the meeting was able to suggest any so the action was rejected.
A resident made the point that the government wanted to use the incinerator to generate electricity, which was a good thing for the community. The objection to this was that it would be an eyesore, pollute and destroy the natural beauty of the area.
In the end, it was agreed that the best thing would be another kind of plant which can sort the waste for recycling. Eva Pattaorou offered to write a letter to the authorities about the residents' concerns and suggestions. A draft copy of the letter will be posted here so people can comment on it before it is sent.
Next meeting date: 2 April
