The Bible is God's word for you. It tells you what He likes and doesn't like. There are many commandments in the Bible that tell you what you should do or shouldn't do.
When something is unclear, measure it against the Bible. Does this act or behavior honor God or not? Is this attitude or act done in love for others or not?
Asking these two questions can help you know whether what you are doing should be done or not.
The Bible should be read because it is God's word. If you don't read the Bible, you don't know what God is like, what His requirements are for us, and what a relationship with God is like. The Bible tells us about God's faithfulness to all people -- how He has mercy on those who don't deserve it, how He helps people when all hope is lost, and many words of encouragement in tough times. Even if you know most of the Bible stories, the Bible tells something new when you read it. The Bible itself is a way to interact with God, because when you read it, He will open your eyes to the wisdom and life in His word. He is speaking to you every time you read His word.
I've read the Bible many times, but each time I read it, God shows me something different and new that is pertinent to my life.
His word is living (Hebrews 4:12). It is not just about the adventures of David, the perseverance of Paul, or the visions of John for the future, it is also God speaking to you directly, making all those good promises to you personally if you believe.
I think the reason you feel pressure to read the Bible is because God is telling you that it is a very important thing to do. God's word is the anchor that will keep you grounded even if everything else may change or fall apart.
If you don't read the Bible, you will be easily deceived into doing the wrong things. God's word is the only measure for right or wrong. Everything is measured against the standard of God's word. So if you don't know it or forgot about it, then you will be easily confused.
Read a chapter of the Bible everyday. Start with the Gospel of Mark. Proverbs is a bit difficult to read because each proverb is designed to be meditated upon. Trying to read through it quickly is hard. So start with an easier book like Mark and continue your way through the New Testament first. You will learn a lot. Also ask God to help you understand and apply His word to your life.
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall." (Matthew 7:24-27)
Here are some of my favorite scriptures that are encouraging and worth remembering, and useful in daily life.
“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
“He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.'” (Hebrews 13:5)
“He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
“It is a trustworthy statement:
For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
If we endure, we will also reign with Him;
If we deny Him, He also will deny us;
If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Timothy 2:11-13)
“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.” (Psalm 46:1-3)
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)
“With God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)
God bless you as you read and apply His word to your life.
