It is important to know that God delivers us out of sins and evil.
It is not by seeking particular methods or going through any rituals or seeking to be baptized in a certain way that we are delivered.
Jesus taught us how to pray in Matthew 6:
"Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'" (Matthew 6:9-13)
This is a guideline for prayer. Prayer starts with praising God and thanking Him.
Next, we need to ask for His will to be done.
That means we need to do God's will ourselves. It isn't enough to confess your sins. You need to repent (turn away from those sins). It is sin that opens a person up for spiritual attacks.
But it is God who delivers us from evil (Matthew 6:13). A pastor from a Pentecostal church cannot deliver you. Only God can.
And Jesus instructs us to pray everyday according to Matthew 6 so that we:
1. Praise, thank, and worship God
2. Ask for God's will to be done in our lives
3. Ask for our daily needs
4. Ask for forgiveness of sins and repent
5. Ask God for deliverance from evil
When we knowingly sin, we give the devil a foothold or opportunity.
The Bible tells us:
"Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 'In your anger do not sin': Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:25-32)
So we need to practice these things and not simply confess. Confessing without doing is not useful.
True confession involves doing.
"Prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves." (James 1:22)
So ask God to help you practice His word in your daily life. And pray the way Jesus taught using the prayer in Matthew 6 as a guideline. Use your own words to pray to God. The prayer in Matthew 6 is not about reciting words, but using your own words to pray. Use Matthew 6 as an outline or guideline for prayer.
Finally, get rid of any idols or idolatrous items in your home.
Go through your home to see if there is anything in it that displeases the Lord.
1. Statues or images of idols or gods from different cultures
2. Altars or small temples and altars dedicated to ancestors (Christians should not bow down to worship anyone except God)
3. Statues or images of saints (saint worship is not good)
4. Statues or images of angels (do not worship angels)
5. Vessels used for worship of other gods or ancestors - cauldrons, incense, and saucers used for such things
6. Wooden masks or feathers used in religious dances or divination
7. Voodoo dolls - used to curse other people
8. Items that people say bring good luck or money or protection - Christians don’t believe in luck but believe in God. Luck is contrary to the teachings of the Bible. And items like rabbit's foot or any such things are contrary to God's word.
9. Magic books or any tool used to perform magic
10. Tarot cards - these are used for witchcraft
11. Poker cards - the pictures on the playing cards are highly symbolic and their meanings are very anti-Christian
12. Ouija boards - these are used in seances and witchcraft, even though some are marketed as a game
13. Exercises that have roots in idolatry - such as yoga (many yoga positions are actually worship postures [e.g. sun salutation]). Such practices should be avoided and books removed from the home.
14. Violent images and pornographic images
15. Tattoos - if you have a tattoo, try to go to a hospital to get it removed. “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:28).
God hates idols and idolatrous items. People in the early church cleaned their homes of things that displeased God:
"And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they added up the prices of the books and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver." (Acts 19:18-19)
If you find any such items in your home, ask for God’s forgiveness and get rid of them. These items should not be given to other people or sold, even if they are made from precious materials. These items should be trashed, burned, or buried. If the idols or idolatrous items are given to other people, then you may entice them to sin. Get rid of idols so that no one would use them for worship again.
It is true that these items are considered abominations by God (1 Corinthians 10:19-22 and Deuteronomy 32:16-17).
So go through your home and remove such things. God does not want to see a home full of these things while you are praying in it.
Most importantly, if you believe in Jesus as your Savior, then you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you (Ephesians 1:13).
You need to know that God is the One who delivers and protects you everyday. No matter how unclean spirits may attack, God helps you overcome.
"You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4)
