Adverbs

Adverbs add to verbs. They provide extra description for how an action is taking place. Lots of people forget to include adverbs in their writing, but adverbs are a crucial part of sentence structure in order to interest the reader.

Compare the two sentences below:

• Kristina carefully tossed Sarah a pen.
• Kristina violently tossed Sarah a pen.

Changing the adverb drastically changes the relationship between Kristina and Sarah in this sentence. What is the difference in the relationship?

When trying to spot an adverb, remember most adverbs end in "-ly."

The author uses the adverb "violently" in the sentence, "Kristina violently tossed Sarah a pen." The adverb "violently" makes me think that Kristina and Sarah have an ongoing dispute or Kristina is holding a grudge against Sarah, as Kristina doesn't seem to care about potentially injuring Sarah.
