Adjectives

Adjectives are descriptive words used to describe nouns. So essentially, adjectives add extra details to people, places, objects, animals, and 'things.'

Adjectives are your first step to making your writing more engaging and interesting. Compare the two sentences below (the nouns have been put in italics for you to see what the adjectives are describing and the adjectives are in bold):

• The park was covered with puddles.
• The bitter, unforgiving park was covered with deep, perilous puddles.

As well as ensuring that you include adjectives, make sure your adjectives match the atmosphere that you're creating. If you're trying to create a happy, joyous scene, do you really want to include adjectives like 'perilous' and 'bitter'?

The author uses the adjective "bitter" in the sentence, "The bitter, unforgiving park was covered with deep, perilous puddles." The adjective "bitter" makes me think that the park was cold and a horrible place to be. It also suggests that the park is maybe "bitter" towards the people visiting it and that it dislikes having visitors.
