On the 8th of March 2024, we presented our 'Digital EMI project' at the (hybrid-mode) FoE research forum at Aston University in Birmingham.
We wanted to share pictures of the event with you....
Our presentation focused on 'How diverse are communication patterns in digitally-mediated EMI classes and HEI stakeholder voices?'
Principal Investigator, Fumiyo Nakatsuhara introduced the digital EMI project and outlined the research questions.
Katie Halley, the PhD student for the project, outlined her PhD and some of the preliminary findings of the Language Functions Analysis, shared between the larger project and the PhD.
The rest of the presentation focused on phase 2 of the project: stakeholder views to digital EMI. Angel Chater explained the COM-B behaviour wheel, which identifies capabilities, opportunities, and motivation of behaviour. Then Chihiro Inoue outlined the results of the current students' questionnaire, influenced from the COM-B model.
Parvaneh Tavakoli presented the results from the teacher surveys and interviews, including some of the challenges that teachers had found in digital EMI classes, and the need for further training. Jim McKinley senior management interviews, highlighting the perceived strengths and weaknesses, and again the need for further training.
Fumiyo Nakatsuhara wrapped up the presentation with the digital EMI project research outputs, including this website, symposiums (Malaysia, UK and Japan), information booklets, open-access corpus, and prototype test specifications and sample tasks.
Our community of practice lead, Chihiro Inoue, was on the panel discussion about the future of English.
