A large part of existence is the ability to fool yourself. After all, your brain tricks you on a daily basis - filling in your blind spot with what it assumes should be there, making up stories when in reality, it doesn't really know what happened.Ā
We are all fallible. Not only are we befuddled by simple optical illusions online (is the dress really black and blue?), but our society persistently chooses to believe in myths, from money to institutions like banks or corporations. They only exist because we all believe in them.Ā
In this edition, our writers have attempted to explore the complex world of illusions - from the supposed absence of women in labour and science, to the art of deception in both war and sports. Lastly, we pose the question: how much of what you think and see is actually real? And how much is just smoke and mirrors?
