Here were some of the biggest moments in sport this year!
Tennis: Coco Gauff Wins the US Open
American teen Coco Gauff finally became a grand slam champion this year at the US Open, at the age of just 19 years old. After turning pro at just 14, Coco has been rising to the top, winning multiple WTA tournaments and making her country proud along the way. Gauff is a fast player and has the speed to be able to defend and retrieve balls all around the court, but he wanted to focus more on punching out powerful groundstrokes, a decision that reaped its rewards right away. When giving her post-match speech, she said, “I feel like I’m a little bit in shock at this moment.” and that “I knew that if I didn’t give it my all, I had no shot at winning." This ‘give it 100%’ attitude is the mindset that drives her to success, and she is an inspiration to all young tennis players around the world.
Ice Hockey: Connor Bedard Is Chosen as the NHL First Draft
One of the biggest moments in ice hockey this year was when 18-year-old Connor Bedard got picked as the first draft pick for this NHL (National Hockey League) season. Considered to be the most talented player of his generation, Bedard had been a huge talking point in the sport after helping Team Canada win the 2023 World Junior Championship, scoring nine goals and 14 assists throughout the course of the tournament. Bedard ended up getting picked by the Chicago Blackhawks and has been living up to the hype ever since, scoring his first NHL goal in just the second game.
Formula 1: Max Verstappen Wins his Third World Driver’s Championship.
F1 prodigy Max Verstappen claimed his third championship earlier this year during the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix. Verstappen had an unbelievably dominant season, winning 18 out of the 21 races, which helped him set the record for the most career wins in a row (10). In fact, the only race that wasn’t won by the Red Bull team this year was in Singapore, when Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz managed to clinch the victory.
Football: Spain wins the women’s World Cup.
This year, the women’s World Cup was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with the Spanish team winning the title after beating England in the final by a score of 1-0. The tournament hosted 32 teams, including Australia, Japan, Norway, Columbia, and many more. Olga Carmona was the player who scored for Spain, carrying her team to the finish line.
