When the trailer for Wonka was first released, it received mixed reactions, with many people saying that it looked weird and underwhelming. However, after watching the movie itself, I found that it was the perfect prequel to a classic story, and a joyful film to watch during the holiday season.
The movie follows Willy Wonka, a young chocolatier with a dream of opening his very own chocolate shop in the Gallery Gourmet, a shopping centre that boasts some of the most infamous chocolate stores in the world. However, he faces a number of obstacles along the way, including a cartel made up of rival chocolate-makers, a corrupt police force and a boarding house that is secretly a front for unpaid labour. Despite this, Willy perseveres with his dream of bringing happiness to others, driven by the fond memories of sharing chocolate with his mother.
The plot is easy to follow and generally holds the audience’s attention. From Willy’s quick-witted escapes from the police, to him and his new friend Noodle almost drowning in melted chocolate, it’s an exciting movie, and director Paul King has done a wonderful job in creating a magic world that is sure to entrance viewers.
Willy Wonka himself is played by oscar-nominated actor Timothee Chalamet, who delivers a sweet and sensational performance. Chalamet’s Wonka is optimistic and bright-eyed, a lot more innocent than Johnny Depp’s eerie portrayal of the chocolate-man in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This Wonka is constantly wearing a smile on his face and occasionally even breaks into song. While some may find Chalamet’s performance a little bit silly, I actually found it to be the perfect amount of naivety, because that’s what the young version Willy Wonka is supposed to be - joyful with just a sprinkle of simple-mindedness. It makes sense for him to be charming rather than Depp’s eccentric and weird, since this version of Wonka takes place before the ways of the world made him into a recluse.
Olivia Coleman also delivered a brilliant performance as Mrs Scrubitt, a nasty woman who runs a boarding house that Willy is forced to work in after he struggles to read the fine print of a contract. Coleman’s character is straight out of a Roald Dahl book - she’s cruel and repulsive, but ultimately amusing and adds another layer of humour to the movie.
Overall, the movie Wonka is a delightful film full of fun for kids and adults alike. After all, everyone needs a little sweet every now and then!
