Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or so they say. Yes, beauty is subjective, but it’s still evident that most of the things we find attractive or aesthetically pleasing are highly influenced by the environments we grew up in, as well as the cultures that shaped us. Beauty is a fearsome weapon, even if most of us underestimate its power. Pretty privilege, for instance, doesn’t just get you free food and extra attention, it has also been proven to reduce people’s prison sentences (so remember to doll up before you go to trial!) But beauty is also powerful because of its ability to bring us together - whether through art, music, or even something as simple as a lovely sunset.
This month’s theme, “Beauty”, is easily interchangeable with love*, therefore honouring Valentine’s Day, Aphrodite and the coming Spring in one go. In this edition, our writers have discussed beauty’s consequences (when it becomes destructive) and the many places we can find beauty, whether on the street, in media, in fairy tales, or even in maths.
Enjoy the read!
*Not because love is purely based on looks, but because love is very much about finding beauty - both literal and figurative - in the most unexpected people and places.
