Assignment 2
This assignment challenges us to explore a range of projection mapping design concepts and assess our potential to create immersive content with strong narrative skills and engagement considerations. We will neep to develop a narrative outline/script, mood board, and storyboard to structure our interactive projection mapping project. This phase ensures that our concepts are visually compelling, narratively engaging, and technically feasible.
The Pinterest board was actually already created during Week 1, we spent a few weeks more to explore more interesting content which fits to our theme and add them to our moodboard.
Our group decided to incorporate particle-based visual designs as the main art direction for this immersive projection project.
For Assignment 2, we started working with the narrative structure, moodboard, storyboard, and sound design. I was focusing with the sound design at first, as I am really a sound person, that I tend to have the auditory image in mind before I had the visual image. But then we had some miscommunication within the group at that time, which no one was doing the storyboard. Therefore, I had to rush it out before the consultation.
I exported the template of canvas provided by Mr. Shakir to png file and imported it into Procreate as reference. Then I drew every frame of the storyboard, seperated into different layers, in order to export them easily and bring them into our slides.
The storyboard we came out with consists of 12 frames, which means that, even the timeframe of 1 min 30 sec doesn't seem enough for us to showcase the whole story. We tried to request for a longer time limit, around 2 min 30 sec, but failed, so we decided to go with 1 min 45 sec.
Back to the sound design, I first created a draft of 1min 30sec in Adobe Audition. I looked for free stock audios online to compose them into the soundtrack, trying hard to visualise the image I had in mind with the help of auditory imaging. As a lot of sound effects we are using here are environment sounds or underwater sound effects, which makes it rather difficult to look for the desired effects. Due to time constraint, I had to use want I can find first, then think about refining them afterwards.
I added quite some effects in Au, to create the immersiveness and the effect of being underwater, and found out the easiet way to make them sound underwater - Parametric Equalizer - Low Pass, which means it cuts off most of the high frequency sounds, making it sound more muffled, thus creating the underwater effect.
I was somewhat quite satisfied with the outcome, but just the time frame of 90 seconds makes it sound really in a rush. After a quick discussion with teammates, (after redrawing the storyboard) I decided to edit one extended version, so that it suits the tempo we desire.
After showing our storyboard and sound design sample to Mr Zeon, we received some feedbacks for improvements:
refine the storyboard to better visualise what the team wants to convey
remove the sad music at the beginning, as it seems like trying to pull the audience into the sad emotion too deliberately, and it's achieving negative effects
the 2min 30sec version seems too long, the max time limit we are given is 1min 45sec
include annotation and time stamp for every frame in storyboard
Assignment 2 Presentation Slides
Concept Sound Design Sample
This assignment reinforced my understanding of narrative-driven design and how projection mapping can be used as a powerful storytelling tool. I learned the importance of visual rhythm, pacing, and emotional engagement in crafting an immersive experience. Additionally, working through challenges with my team strengthened my ability to collaborate and adapt creatively within a group setting.
Moving into the production phase, I aim to refine our animation techniques further and ensure that the final output aligns with our initial vision. The lessons learned from this phase will guide our next steps in bringing the project to life effectively.
