Analyse and review games from Taylor's Seniors
The Design School Game Dev Zone link: https://thedesignschool.taylors.edu.my/gamezone/
For the first week we are to do some analyse regarding the games made with Unity by our Design School seniors on the Game Dev Zone. During the class, we spent some time exploring and playing some the games uploaded on the website.
Sad to say that I'm quite an idiot in playing computer games TT, I can't control my keyboard and mouse well, and most video games I play are on touch screens. So I had to spend a lot of time to get use to the controls of the games, although most of them are simple as WAD keys to move upwards, right and left, I'm still a stupid in playing the games. 😭
Well, nevertheless, the games developed by our seniors are quite interesting and fun. Although my bad gaming skills hinder me from clearing all the levels, I still had some fufilling experiences.
This side-scrolling game is CUTE! The goal of the game is to save Pon, the pink colour girly character.
The controls are as simple as using the A and D key or left and right arrow button to move around + spacebar to jump.
No synopsis or game goals given, players have to guess and assume by themselves
No game instructions or controls given, just a starting page with a start game button, and straight away into the gameplay screen. Players has to figure out themselves how to move and control the characters. But since the controls are quite easy, it's okay to me.
Pros:
art style is lovely and cute
cute self-drawn character and environment design, love it
Cons:
starting from the third level, the screen suddenly zooms in, if the size is constant throughout all levels would be better, or maybe add in a zoom in transition, at least it won't look so unexpected all of a sudden
the screen zoomed in too big makes it makes it difficult to see the whole interface, or the route the character have to go through of that level
Pros:
the overall gameplay controls are quite easy to understand
well, the replay feedback screen when the character dies is quite disturbing and funny at the same time, but it successfully stimulated my desire to win
gameplay is quite challenging but fun to play
Cons:
in the first level, my character fell off the border and continued falling, not able to reset or teleport back to starting point, had to restart the game. would be better if there are walls set around the gameplay area in case the players fall off
there is a ground outside the border starting from the second level, which when the character falls off, it dies immediately
at the fifth level there is this unlimited falling bug again
the difficulty for each level is not consistent, the third level is suddenly too hard and too challenging (especially for noob gamers like me), I can't get through it and had to ask my friend for help, and then he told me that the rest levels are much easier than the third
has no desire to replay the game even though I could not clear all the levels, because the third level is far too difficult for me
Pros:
relevent sound effects for some movements and when the character hits something
Cons:
no game sound track throughout the game, quite a pity
some sound effects are too loud and some are too soft, not consistent enough
screen size not responsive, forced to play in full screen mode
do not feel good about this game
instructions unclear, goal and motive unclear, the plot and storyline seems to be rich but actually it's hollow
dialouge with the npcs shows some stories, but there are no further development regarding and the plot
no sense of achievement after completing all levels
I accidentally died at the start, but when I replay, it goes straight away to the third level (boss fight level)
was wondering around at the first scene for a long time and not sure what to do and how to go to the next scence
the character is walking too slowly! players might run out of patient quickly
loads of bugs, when the character attacks and there is an npc standing in front, the attack effects duplicates and stays on the screen for some time
there are objects to interact with but when I pressed Y there is no dialouge or else the dialouge is out of the screen, therefore starting from the second level I don't even know what I'm doing
character fell off the screen, again, and there is no method to teleport back, had to restart the whole game
the ghosts can push my character away, and it feels very weird
attack animations went across the screen behind the house, while the character moves across the screen in front of the house
platforms kept dissapearing upon touching, is this one of the game mechanics?
groping for some time at the final level but finished the game without knowing how I did it, turns out to be that the final boss had to be killed by jumping and attacking at the same time
final boss fight feels odd and without excitement, just full of question marks in my head
when the achievement upon completion popped out I was filled with confusion
Pros:
can see the efforts put in here, having so many assets and different environment &props design for different scenes
Cons:
personally I do not like the art style very much, and the designs seem a little rough to me
interface design is a little poor
size of assets seems to not be appropriate on my screen
Pros:
relevent background music for different scenes, quite cool thing
the background music are in loops
Cons:
some sound effects are not that fit to the gameplay
the walking animation and the sound effect does not match nicely
form a small group, using 'Scamper' or '3(i)', to ideate and come up with a game idea
use some classic games as references
include:
story
gameplay
After learning about SCAMPER & 3(i), we formed a small group of five, and started playing some classic retro games from the link Mr. Razif have provided.
I've tried playing a few, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sim Tower, Pac Man etc.
Then we started ideating the game we are trying to create, using the two methods above and with the main source from Sonic the Hedgehog game.
I did some research of the background story of Sonic, and few other games my teammates suggested, then we tried to combine and alter the story until it makes sense to all of us. For the gameplay part we tried to take references of different elements from different games, such as obstacles, ghost chasing and powerups to make the game interesting enough.
I was having a lot of fun during this class activity, as we are using our creativity to ideate a game not from scratch but from old and classic games as references. I admit that most of these classic retro games are actually difficult to surpass, as they're all to classic, and have been memories of a generation. But what can we try is to think out of the box, and by the help of different techniques, we can create our own game with the style of ours.
Pick a game, and ask yourselves on what specifically that you like about the game.
List them down
The game I chose is Honkai: Star Rail
What I specifically like about the game:
High quality graphics, anime-inspired art style, environment design (every planet or region has different design with different culture and ethnics as references)
Interesting & exciting plot - going on an interstellar adventure and exploring different planets and region, the plot direction is always unexpectable
Nice character design (pretty waifus, handsome husbandos), character background stories are deep and fascinating, can even experience some character growth in the plot, with makes it more catchy
Build up different characters to form a strong team - is like seeing them grow and become stronger while battling side by side with them
Turn-based combat system, allows player to have enough time to think about strategies on how to deal big damage on the enemies
Auto-battle mode - hands free, saves time, can do other things while the game plays automatically, is a special way to play while work
Interact with NPCs - some with sad background stories and some with funny dialogue (it’s like the world in the game is alive)
Combination of many kinds of puzzle solving in one game, with different levels of difficulties, I love puzzle solving games, so an all-in-one game is very fun to me
From what I specifically like about the game, Mr Razif concluded that I'm more to an "Explorer" character type who loves to explore or just wander in the open world and interact with characters or npcs, and also enjoys "Immersion" and "Creativity" in game. Mr Razif suggested that I can include these few aspects that I love into my game design document.
