Activepresenter is a software to record your screen, it also allows you to edit the video. It is made by Atomi Systems and the full version is paid. Though, you can get a limited version free of cost, it is sufficient for our purpose (recording and basic editing). At present it only supports Windows and Mac, doesn't work for linux.
Below, we have given a step by step guide to create a video in Activepresenter. If you prefer a video, click on this link.
Step 1: Download Activepresenter.
Go to the download tab of Activepresenter (or search on google).
Download the file for your operating system.
Install the software on your system.
Step 2: Open Activepresenter on your system
Click on the record video link.
A new window will open up to set the recording parameters.
Step 3: Set the recording parameters
The left part specifies the part of the screen to be recorded. You can record the entire screen or customize the blue boundary (customize to record a particular application too).
The right part specifies microphone and webcam setting. Make sure that you have selected the mic and kept the volume high (we advise full).
Step 4 (optional): Enable the webcam
You can select a webcam to get your picture in the video too. The final video will have both, your screen as well as the webcam feed (Picture in picture kind of video). You can position and resize the webcam feed later.
For this option, remember to make eye contact from time to time (by looking at the webcam).
Step 5: Record the video
Click on the red record button. There will be a countdown and then everything inside the customized area of the screen and your audio will be recorded.
You can finish the video by pressing "Ctrl+End".
Step 6: Save the project
Activepresenter records a video as a project. The project file will only open in Activepresenter, but it allows you to edit the video. We will convert it into mp4 later.
Click at the Activepresenter tab on the top right to save the file at a convenient location.
Step 7: Edit the video (optional)
You can play the recorded video.
You can select some part by clicking on the timeline and expanding the selection.
The selected part can be removed, copy-pasted.
You can insert text/image in the video too.
Step 8: You are almost done! export file as mp4
Click on the export tab.
Select the video option from the top left.
Step 9: Export settings (IMPORTANT)
Specify the frame rate and quality (for instructional videos even 10fps works, quality around 40 is ok)
Make sure that the format is mp4
Set the desired location and click on OK. It will take some time to export the video.
You are done ! Congratulations. If you would like to compress an existing video using Activepresenter, go to this guide. There are a lot of online tutorials (Activepresenter web-page) if you want to go into more details or look at other features.
