Android

Broadly Android-based tablets come with two flavors: with and without active pen support. Some examples of active pen supported tablets are Samsung Tab S4/S6, versions of Huawei MediaPad tablets. These tablets support high-precision pen input. On the other-hand, tablets without active pens can still be used with capacitive stylus, which is a less precise input method and needs to be used with assisted software. One may use tablet with either an active or a passive stylus for teaching. Getting used to with stylus and proper application is necessary for hassle-free use of them.

Further, one may use an application, which has built-in screen recording capability or one may use two applications: one for writing on the screen and one for recording the screen.

  • An example of application that takes note as well as has built-in screen recording capability is LectureNotes (one requires to further purchase LectureVideos to give LectureNotes screen recording capability). These apps are paid, where one time purchase of each is required. This method is what we feel is simpler and preferred. Please follow this link for our simple guide of using this application.

  • On the other-hand if you prefer to use another application for taking notes, one may use a second application for screen recording. There are several such application, and one open-source example is MNML Screen Recorder. Please follow this link for our simple guide of using this application. Additionally, Microsoft OneNote is an useful application that can be used for taking notes in this case, especially as IIT Kanpur has subscription to educational services of microsoft. OneNote is cross-platform (can be accessed from Android, Web and Windows) and integrates well with One Drive.

If you want to have your video along with the screen of the tablet being recorded, then one way is to have the tablet screen mirrored on a desktop and then using OBS or active-presenter for recording the desktop.

There are many applications available on android for screen-mirroring (or wireless display), such as Miracast. One useful app is ScreenStream, which is an open-source and extremely simple app to use.

For recording the desktop's screen, please consider the section on computer screen recording.
