A Final Glance at the Empire: The Encounter of the West and East in Mrs. Archibald Little’s The Land of the Blue Gown

Abstract:

Being a wife of a British businessman, Mrs. Archibald Little is a nineteenth century Victorian women travel writer, too. According to her, foot-binding is one of China’s oldest, most deep-rooted and domestic customs which need s to be abolished. To achieved this goal, she established Natural Feet Society in 1895. This thesis would like to analyze Mrs. Archibald Little’s efforts to help Chinese to be free from the physical bondage imposed by foot-binding in her travel to China in the late nineteenth century. As well as her feminist pursuits, this thesis would like to address issues like the encounter of the West and the East in her travel around China, which are no less challenging and controversial and are represented in her travel writing The Land of the Blue Gown. This thesis is divided into four parts. Introduction includes research the motive and research methodology. Chapter One, which is entitled ‘’The Orientalist Construction of China in Nineteenth-Century-Travel Narratives,” is separated into three sections. Chapter Two, which is entitled “The Contracts between western and Eastern religions,” is separated into seven sections. Chapter Three, which is entitled “The Liberated Female Body and the politics of Liberation,” is separated into three sections. Conclusion argues that the encounters of the West and the East as represented in Mrs. Archibald Little travel writing reveal her prejudices, which are sometimes subtle, toward the Oriental Other.
