摘要:

近年來,許多學者提出跨語言實踐對語言學習有相關的益處,跨語言實踐跨越語言及語意符號界線,視所有語言及符號皆為溝通互動的資源。我們在使用語言的過程中經常會配合多種語言與手勢、圖片、影片、音樂等多媒體來構建意義和交流。跨語言實踐也被證明可以促進師生之間的關係,並給學生的學習帶來正面的影響。在全英語授課課堂中使用跨語言實踐的文獻相當多,但是有關台灣學生的語言使用和在以英文為外語的課堂中使用跨語言實踐的文獻甚之缺少。

     因此,本研究旨在探討台灣英語專業的學生在以英文為外語的課程中使用跨語言實踐的經驗、看法與建議。本研究採用質性研究法來進行資料收集,採用了問卷以及半結構式個別訪談。首先,透過社交媒體向五十位曾經參與過跨語言實踐課程的大學生發送了線上問卷,並對其中十二位參與者進行了個別線上訪談。研究者使用了質性個案研究法來了解參與者的深入認知,並提供更多關於參與者認知的描述性數據。

本研究主要發現如下:

1.      大多數英語專業的學生以英文為外語的課程中的跨語言實踐,持中立到正向的態度,包括跨語言實踐對他們英語學習的各種好處。

2.      大部分英語專業的學生高度認同跨語言實踐的有效性,有助於增強對課程內容或抽象概念的理解並改善課堂氣氛。

3.      大多數英文專業的學生認為跨語言實踐可以幫助英語程度較低的學生和台灣當地英語專業的學生。

4.      參與以英文為外語之課程的學生建議教師應該考慮在不同的學習環境中,針對不同英語水平的學生使用不一樣程度的跨語言實踐。

Abstract:

     Recently, more researchers have acknowledged the pedagogical benefits of translanguaging practices, the use of multiple languages and multiple media, to construct meaning and communication. Translaguaging practices have been proven to facilitate the positive relationships between teachers and students and have positive impact on students’ learning. A fairly large body of literature exists on the translanguaging practices in English Medium Instruction (EMI) classroom. However, there is a surprising lack of information on local students’ language use and the implementation of translanguaging practices in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses in Taiwan.

     The purpose of this study is to explore Taiwanese English-major students’ experiences and perceptions of translanguaging practices in EFL courses. By employing a qualitative case study, the data were collected from questionnaires and interviews. Online questionnaires were sent to 49 participants by social media and online interviews were conducted with 12 students who had taken the EFL courses with translanguaging practices.

The major findings are listed as the followings:

1.      Most English majors held a neutral-to-positive attitude towards translanguaging practices in EFL courses, including the varied benefits of traslanguaging on their English language learning.

2.      Most English-major students highly agreed that the effectiveness translanguaging practices on their learning, particularly for enhancing their comprehension of the course content or abstract concepts and improving the classroom dynamics.

3.      Most students considered that translanguaging practices could help English-major students with lower English proficiency and the local Taiwanese English-major students.

4.      The EFL students suggested that teachers should consider how many translanguaging practices should be used in different classroom contexts with students of different English levels.
