The Effects of Extensive Reading on English Learning Motivation among Junior High School EFL Students 

摘要:

此篇研究的目的是探討對於臺灣國中生實施課堂外廣泛性閱讀之可能性。此研究將會討論實驗組和對照組在參與完此次活動後之學習英語動機方面的差異性以及實驗組學生對於這次活動之反應。

一百八十五位就讀於高雄市立瑞祥高中附屬國中部之國中一年級學生參與此次活動。實驗組有九十二位學生而對照組九十三位學生。此實驗為期十周並使用問卷調查。

實驗結果指出實施課堂外廣泛性閱讀可以促進實驗組學生對於學習英語之內部動機。然而外部動機卻影響不大。此外,他們對於此活動之反應是肯定的。因此,臺灣國中老師在編排教案時可以考慮實施課堂外廣泛性閱讀。

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of applying an extensive reading program outside the class to junior high school students in Taiwan. The study focuses on changes in motivation in learning English and the experimental group students’ reaction towards this activity after they participated in this activity.

One hundred and eighty-five seventh graders in Kaohsiung Municipal Ruei-Siang Junior-Senior High School participated in this study: 92 students in the experimental group and 93 students in the control group. The experiment lasted ten weeks. Questionnaires are used to collect the data.

The results of the questionnaires show that the extra-curricular extensive reading can enhance the experimental group students’ intrinsic motivation to learn English. However, the extrinsic motivation is little affected. Additionally, their reaction towards this activity is positive. Therefore, it is suggested that junior high school teachers in Taiwan might want to take the out-of-class extensive reading activity into consideration when they are planning their English teaching schedule.
