A Corpus-Based Analysis of English Vocabulary Used in Government Websites Related to Immigrant Labor Issues

Abstract:

Language is a tool that keeps humankind communicating with one another. In modern life, more and more people are migrating for employment opportunities, and language is one of the issues along with migration. People nowadays can get reliable information via government websites; moreover, most countries provide information in English. According to Laufer (1989), ninety-five percent of the words from a text must be known by the reader to get adequate reading comprehension. This study aims to provide an analysis of vocabulary load of websites associated with immigrant labor by collecting the e-government information for immigrant labor as a study corpus. Moreover, creating a word list associated with immigrant labor topics is undertaken as well. The results show that the English level of government websites collected in this study is moderate. People would need to equip themselves with four thousand to five thousand word families to comprehend the websites. Hence, this study also developed a word list with 243 word families to provide those who want to read about immigration related issues a short-cut to learn the needed vocabulary. For a basic English learner who may have knowledge of the most frequent 2000 word families, they can learn these additional 243 word families to meet the same comprehension ability on this topic with those who have a vocabulary at a 4000 to 5000 word family level.
