JR was the instructor for this workshop. I had my daughter's Back to School night, so I wasn't able to do the live workshop, but I tried to make sure I participated in the activities the best that I could.
He used 4 framing questions for his presentation.
He spent the majority of the night working us through the first 3 questions. Each section had some interactive component using one of the G Suite tools, most times. In the first section we did an activity where we used the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to address potential questions students may have about a topic. After a short video, or some introduction, the idea is to ask students to write (or type) as many questions as they have about the topic. After this, release the students to research (and/or discuss) answers to the questions. I liked the idea that students are more invested in answering questions they have come up with versus questions you've asked.
The next section was on qualifying apps. We had to create a couple slides on apps we used in the class and examine them in light of 4 criteria. How well does the app allow you to: Capture student learning, Sort data, ease of Assessment, and facilitation of Discussion or feedback.
Question 3 dealt with how we can move the focus from consuming content to creating it. We had to write a short elevator speech getting a board member or superintendent to purchase something for us. I really liked the focus on the the why of learning first (Golden Circle-Simon Sinek) before we consider what tool we would use.
Question 4 just dealt with how we use our Acceptable Use Policies to teach our students what it means to be a responsible digital citizen.
This was a great workshop and I certainly wished I could have been live. The use of the QFTin the classroom is something I want to try with my students. Using the Sheet to gather the data will help more of my students to access the information and contribute, especially my developing readers.
Using the framework for assessing the apps we use in our class will be very helpful in keeping the students' learning in mind versus what are people raving about- what's new and flashy.
There were many components that I will be keeping in mind, sharing with others. Most I discussed above. A great addition to our workshops.
