Reflections

I have just finished my first semester in the online teaching program and have learned so much! We started talking about online classes and what to expect. We learned that some are educated certain ways such as visual, audio, reading/writing and by doing activities. We discussed active and passive learning. We did several group projects, including an annotated bibliography, a paper discussing how people learn, and a a WIKI page. We learned all about teaching styles, and it begged the question, is the person a Expert, Formal Authority, Personal Model, Facilitator, and Delegator or a combination? I am a combination and can be an expert or a personal model. I often delegate work too so I can adapt to anything. We learned all about learning theories and how they pertain to teaching and how they help create courses. We read about the Seven Principles and how to incorporate them into courses. We then discussed how we can create sites and what online technologies we can use (I love Google Maps!). Last but not least, we created portfolios and here we are.

All of the information gave me ideas on how to deal with teaching online classes. I plan to create videos, write articles and use technologies we learned. If a student prefers to create a PowerPoint instead of a paper, why not? Why not have students work together to create a project that will be better because they used all of their strengths together? Why not create some classes differently based on the learning theories? If I develop a class on building something, I will use constructivism, if I develop a class on ethics, behaviorism is what I will use, and cognitivism for a class like science. I like that we discussed not only how people learn but how teachers teach and how classes are developed based on learning theories. This so important to know because it helps create great online classes!

I look forward to the next classes and learning even more. Learning all of this will make me a better teacher, a better student and even a better person because I will understand people better! It's the start of a great adventure!
