Fonzy Glitch

The design (BTS)

Background: This week’s design also was inspired by Utah State basketball, in addition to a tutorial I came across on YouTube. The theme, with USU making the NCAA Tournament and having a promising future, is the future and the design being futuristic.

Contrast: The main contrast is between the dark, greyish black background and the white text and uniform.

Alignment: This image was created with the canvas size optimized for an Iphone screen, so most of what’s happening is split in three sections. The text and logo are aligned on the left and the subject is aligned to the right.

Proximity: Anderson is the main element of the design and takes up most of the space. He’s right-aligned and his eyes are just slightly above the top right third line.

Repetition: The main repetition is the glitch effect that is applied throughout most of the design. Some more subtle repetitive elements are the white speckles, some being dust and some being paint splatters.

Color Scheme: Two palettes are incorporated: RGB and white, black and gray.

Font Choice: The font was found after 15-20 minutes of searching font websites. I was looking for something that represented futuristic, but most of the options looked cartoonish, which isn’t what I wanted. So Urban Tribe it was.

Photoshop: The main tools I used are listed below.

  • Texture layering

  • Noise filter

  • Channels selection and move tool

  • Type tool

  • Subject select, quick selection and layer masking

  • Levels adjustment layer

  • Adobe Camera Raw

  • Brightness and contrast adjustment layer

  • Pen tool

  • Rectangular marquee tool

  • Stroke and effects

  • Custom paint brush tool

The genesis of this design, as mentioned, was a YouTube tutorial I saw while I was browsing. I have made a similar effect in Premiere Pro, but I wanted to see if I could create the glitch effect for a design. I started by cutting out Anderson and laying the image on a black canvas. Next, I added some adjustment layers and took the image through camera raw to give it more life. Then, by duplicating the image and separating the RGB colors in channels, I was able to isolate the blue and red color channels and by offsetting them a bit, that gives the RGB look. After, came the glitch effect, which is done by copying sections of the image with the rectangular marquee tool and dragging them off the image or staggering them slightly ( I have included a link if you’d like to try it out). Finally, some text, effects, paint splatter and layers were added in to finish out the design.
