Dolberg Euros graphic

Design process

Contrast: Luckily, there is a great deal of contrast naturally in the Denmark flag and uniform, which I pulled from to create the other elements on the design. The black and white are obviously contrasting, but the red contrasts well with both in addition.

Colors: I like the colors of the Denmark flag and uniform, so for this design I chose not to create a color palette with other colors included.

Proximity: There are a few details to proximity in this design. Grid lines drawn around all four edges is how I lined the top of the hair and the logo at the bottom. The main player in front is centered to help display for social media purposes. The silhouette in the backdrop is slightly offset to the right to balance the image with the paint stripe and text on the left. Both players's eyes are lined up pretty close to the top third line.

Texture: In designs like this, I like to take inspiration from other creators, those who are at the top of their game in social media graphic creation. A lot of what makes their designs unique is the textures and layering they create and implement, so I chose to experiment and create some patterns for the background and add some texture elements — those on the border and lightly over the backdrop most notably.

Photoshop: The main tools I used are listed below.

  • Clipping mask

  • Layer effects panel

  • Pattern creation panel

  • Type tool

  • Paint brush

  • Calculations (for player mask)

  • Camera raw filter

  • Texture layering

Third revision:

Based on the feedback from my peers and instructor, I made a couple revisions for the final piece. The main suggestion was to make the name of the player more apparent, this will make it more clear for those who may not know who Kasper Dolberg is. It was also suggested to try a new font. For this style of design, I like the mood to feel playful and energetic, which is why I switched to a more cartoonish-looking font.

Idea: During the 2021 Euros, I wanted to make a series of graphics that represented some of the biggest teams and some that were reaction pieces to big results. After Kasper Dolberg had an incredible quarterfinals game, I decided to make a graphic revolving around him —

and this original photo really represented the energy I wanted the design to have, so I built the rest of the design around this image.

The use for this image is to be displayed on social media. The design is sized for Instagram specifically, but also works for 16:9 aspect ratios.

Initial revision: So, to update the design for this week's exhibit, I wanted to improve on the cutout of Dolberg — specifically the hair. We learned how to use alpha channels and calculations this week and that's what I used to mask out the player more efficiently and the results gave a cleaner cutout as well. Overall, I created two alpha channels, cleaned up the mask a bit with brushing and quick mask and it turned out with more detail around the hair.
